We passed this beautifully presented boat in Dundalk Bay last Monday,
it looked like she was having an even tougher time than we were-

    She was making for Skerries-

I managed to squeeze a few off,
but conditions were just too bad to get anything really good-

Anyway, if anyone knows anyone on this boat,
maybe you could let them know about this pic-
They took a few of us, and it would be nice to see them-

    Any c&c welcome as usual-

Looks like a lovely paint job on the hull or maybe she’s just so new she isn’t dirty yet and I expect she’s covered in that stuff that makes oysters become cream puffs. The photo looks a bit odd because the top of the mast is all higgerly pokerly and your exif data seems a bit truncated but it doesn’t look like camera shake so perhaps it’s a drop of sea spray on your knikker. Lovely looking day for a sail.

    Thanks Bjorn,
yes that little boat was moving-
forward, sideways, up. down, and rotating back and forth, to and fro.

    As were we.
That picture was taken with a camera in one hand and a mainsheet in the other.
so I’d like it to be sharper-
    maybe next time-

I think its a shiny new paint job-
I have other pictures where she’s knocked way down-
unfortunately there’s more movement in those than in this one-

Thanks for the comment, appreciate it-

I’m guessing you were the skipper then! Either that or the skipper didn’t see you :D

    No Thorsten,
    I was the crew-
    The skipper had the tiller-
Quite a handful with only the two of us in high winds-

Must be quite some boat if you can lie in bed and take pictures like this at the same time. The skipper might have appreciated some help with the tilling though :)

    Thanks Horace,
though I sense that somehow you’ve taken some license with my description-
I must thank you for illustrating the similarity between the tiller and the plough,
    a relationship I hadn’t previously considered-

Obviously, it takes a poet to mine all the seams-

One of my favourite shots from you, of late!

Love the strong diagonal, along with a well placed horizon. They sky tones are stunning, too.

Being hyper critical, I’d prefer a little more room on the RHS, but you did well to get the shot you did – like I say I’m being hyper critical. My other observation (which could be my eyes playing tricks on me) is that it looks like you have a little bit of barrel distortion there that could do with a tweak. It could just be the coastline, though – difficult to tell on a small image.

    Thanks Tim-
just a shame its a bit shaken-

    You’re right about the distortion,
    but its pincushion distortion-
this is a wide range zoom, and its got it bad-

There is more on the RHS, I think,
but I had to throw away a bit when I rotated it straight- (ish)

    Thanks for looking-
and nothing wrong with being hyper critical-
The closer you get to perfection (in general, not talking about this)
the bigger the little flaws seem-

(old minimalist proverb that I just made up)

My sailing experience is limited to three days on a boat with no wind and a snoring skipper  …. so I won’t pass comment there.. in terms of the photo the colours work really well, and the sky looks great … there is real energy to this shot.. its great, it looks tough, rough and the slightly menacing sky looms over it .. perhaps it could have better delivery (not from me, I think it would be hard to compose a shot like this with my head in a bucket ;) )

I really like it all the same .

    Excellent.

As Tim mentioned, terrific tones in that sky. Good composition and
framing, despite the lack of space on the right. Great sense of
    movement too. Love it.

    Thanks Guys-
    Yes the light saved it-
Too bad we didn’t have another crew member,
I could have had a lot more shots-

LoGill. you do paint a pretty picture-
Though a bucket full of breakfast is a dangerous cargo on a pitching boat-
So It would be over the side for you-
    to decorate the hull instead-

    Thanks for the comments-

JB7, My boating experience is nil. i really like this shot and the conditions it was taken under makes it an even better shot.
Great colours and the angle of the boat gives the impression that it was really moving (he could have been putting the anchor down for all I know).

    Thanks Soda,
    there was movement everywhere-
    Glad you like it,
but it wouldn’t take any enlargement at all-

Tha things you can get away with on the internet-

Would this make a good Black and white conversion Joseph? Never can tell until you try it, and sometimes shots don’t work well in mono. But the big dark foreboding clouds that appear to be chasing the boat down and the choppy sea make me think it would look even more menacing in black and white.

Anyway, I like it is what I really mean… :D
