Is it overcooked?

is the conversion too much? i know it’s a bit noisy too :(

also, why couldn’t i have asked him to take off the watch and move 5 inches to the left so that i could have missed the arch and window altogether?

    *headdesk*

I wouldn’t call it overcooked at all, in fact it’s quite well done. I’m sure at a larger scale the sharpness would be more evident.
You’ve already mentioned the obvious 2 points in this image but the other thing that looks as awkard as shoes on the wrong feet to me is the fact that he’s holding the baby while she has the supporting role (sorry for the he/she). It’s as if he did all the work while she looks on…obviously that wouldn’t be the case. I don’t know, it just looks uneasy.

    wow, that was quick. thanks!

i appreciate what you’re saying about daddy holding the baby while mommy looks on, not something i would have thought about. i did ask both of them to hold the baby and here’s one of the mom but i thought her hands looked a bit akward. what you reckon? one more thing to add to my mental checklist before i snap away.

Yep, she does look awkward plus she’s not smiling. For me, the conversion is a little harsh given the child looks like a brand new baby. If it was a little softer (or warmer) I think it might look more natural (in my opinion).

wayneleone, how do you mean warmer?

this is the original and it has a real orange cast to it. i presume cos i used natural light in a cream room with red furniture?

can anyone help me with this?

    and another:

i really appreciate the feedback and some tips on post processing very welcome!!!

I quite like the shots! Easy enough to sit afterwards and see what was wrong..! *lol* -Been there..done that etc..

Anyhow… attached is my go on what I would have done with one of the shots. -Let me know and I’ll remove once you have had a look.

    Cheers! Ivar :-)

    HI summerdreamn,

you’ve spotted faults on the first one, you now know for next time. Aside from from that, I think it’s a great shot. IMO there is nothing wrong with the father holding the baby. I’ll even go so far as say I think it’s silly that the father holding the baby suggests anything like what was mentioned above. It looks to me that they are together as a family, and happy. Regardless of the watch and arch, they will love this photograph

I think the PP is nice and soft, delicate tones reflect the image, well done.

If you don’t mind, I’d like to suggest you should be more confident with your images. You post very good photographs and you should now that, if you don’t already.

    cheers

wow, eas. thanks :) i really appreciate that. i’m my own worst critic and i know some people are like that.

there are a lot of amazing photographers here and i guess it’s a bit intimidating!
but i try to take something from all the feedback i get because it’s interesting to hear different views and there’s
    always something to learn from.

i guess because i was indirectly paid for this as well, i want to make sure they like it!

    so, thanks!

    Hi Summerdream,
I’ve done some baby shoots and came across the orange colour cast problem sometimes too. I’ve found that you can get good results using the colour balance layer on Photoshop, the only problem being with such a very small / nearly newborn baby is that they will always look a bit blue against the parents’ skin which is why most parents prefer the b&w version.
But nice shots – I bet they will be delighted!

thanks, orla :) i will definitely give that a go. this is only my second non family new born and i’ve still plenty to learn. you’re right, b&w really suits the subject, i’ll play around with it.

Only seeing this now summer, I like the processing on the first image. As said before it’s definitly not overcooked, only different from the usual stuff.

And as said above, your pics are good, you need to be more confident with yourself.your pictures are of a good standard.

hehehe, One of my pet hates is this:

Mother looks after the kids while dad works = “parenting”

Father looks after the kids while mum works = “babysitting”

    Grrrrrr!!!
