Is it Roy Keane???

My grandson Dylan, He brought down all his football gear to pose for me today. He’s a great little guy and I’m very proud of him. Age 9 and plays for Shamrock Rovers Gaelic and Soccer. This is a ‘high key’ image…I think :? I set the lights on the background to bleach it out and a reflector in front of the subject to bounce the light back onto him….C&C preciated.

    Hi Pat.
Excellent portrait. Can’t decide whether direct eye contact would work better? :?

I think the balls branding being upside down doesn’t help the image.

Thanks Miki, I have one with eye contact but decided this pose looked better…to me anyway.

Many thanks for the reply, appreciated and valued.

I spotted that earlier, but IMO it doesn’t make a difference, it certainly doesn’t take away from the portrait. Different if it were a promo shot for the brand!!

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

To me it makes a huge difference, it was the first thing that I noticed when I looked at the image.

It may be a small issue to you but a big distraction!

Well John, the way I look at it is…I wouldn’t ask the young fellow to “pick up the ball and make sure the logo is turned the right way” It was as natural as possible given the studio circumstances. However I take your point and again many thanks for taking the time.

Hi Pat, absolutely agree with John, it is a posed shot done with studio lights and the logo on the ball is an eyecatcher…you didn’t just ask the young lad to pick up the ball though !! if it was out on a pitch…fair enough but it does look odd…also this wouldn’t be considered a high-key portrait…its nearly the opposite with the face a little under exposed but I still like the photo overall.

Hi Noel, long time no hear as they say!

Well fair play, if it distracts it distracts. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
With regard to the ‘high key’ aspect, to the best of my knowledge I thought it was..or there abouts
but I’m new to this side of photography, although I did view a tutorial about this and that’s where I got the idea from…don’t know after that Noel.

I am not an expert on Portraits myself ,but one question.

Why did you go low to shoot the shot? My idea of the shot taken low, would have been if Dylan was gazing down at you (like Roy Keane would, Menacingly )

Everything else works, exposure , sharpness etc

Hi Pat, although is a nice image, and u should be proud to have it, i think there is room for improvement.

The logo might not be a huge issue, but the fact that is almost horizontal and upside down, does make you want to read it properly. I don’t think it would have matter too much if it was at a different angle.

i think u really need a third light for this shot instead of the reflector. The lights on the back are too strong and that means you have a strong spill at the side of his face. This and the fact that you only had a reflector to bounce the light back at your grandson, make the subject to appear underexposed. A front light would have given nicer catchlight too.

The low angle and the fact that he’s not looking.. almost makes it look as a product shot in my opinion, and loses the sense of a portrait.
    But that’s only my opinion.

    Good work,

    Thanks John and Claudio.

John the low angle was one f many, I was moving around and trying different angles and the one posted seemed to look best to me. Menacing didn’t come into it for me, it was merely the stance and the jersey.

Claudio, thank you and I take your point. The reflector, in hindsight was directly in front of him and the tutorial I got the idea from had 2 reflectors at angles. Maybe if I had done this it have had better catchlight.
This is all a learning experience for me, as I am new to portraiture and I know I have a lot to learn.

Thanks again folks and as I said before…I really appreciate the input.

    Hi Pat,

I think when looking at this shot that you can imagine your grandson donning the captains armband and getting ready to sing the anthem! Nice shot and agree with above but for your entry into portraiture very well done. Not an expert by any means but that’s my two cents!

    Hi Al

Very nice of you to take the time to have a look and give your opinion. Yes, I think you’ve summed it up very well, and I suppose I can’t see the faults because of that :) That being said, I still love this image and am very proud of it.

    Many thanks Al.

    Hi,
There is nothing wrong with this portrait, it is ok (excluding maybe that ball upsidedown-not sure)
But there is nothing special also (i know it is your grandson and we all likes ours childrens more than others:)
In my opinion will try something more dramatic, to make hium looks like fighter, so i will get it done on black bacdrop and will use only wee bit spot light from one side and maybe something to bounce wee bit light from other side.
    something like this:
    http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-106610393/stock-photo-angry-soccer-player-with-a-ball.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;
and I wont use aparature F 5.6 i will try F2.2 maybe even lower depands what you have.
