Is putting a holga lens on my DSLR cheating?

I used to love shooting on the Holga, but really don’t have time to do a lot with it. If I had the lens in my bag I would put it on the 20D though.. Any one do this?

Holgamods sells these http://www.holgamods.com/paypal/ (half way down the page) but I am sure you can make your own.

I assume you loose the vignetting with the crop factor -plus will you be shooting at a completely different focal length compared to a normal holga lens? I don’t think they’re going to be comparable to holga pics, but sounds interesting.

i think this is a really interesting question actually :-)

i must first say that i have no axe to grind :-) .. i think digital is great and has an obvious place in replacing certain aspects of film photography .. however ..

the holga, toy cameras, polaroid and analogue photography in general are not just about the lens.
they are about affordability, ease of use, fun, light leaks, happy accidents, expired film, essentially unpredictability.

the one thing that digital is not is unpredictable.

    just my random thoughts :-)

I don’t know. I thought about this and I have nothing against digital, but as said above a holga isn’t just about the lense, it’s the whole emcompassing of the entirety of the camera as a whole. To me taking a digital shot with a holga isn’t a holga shot in a true sense of the word, and to me…well…..no offense, but it’s just being lazy. If you want to take a shot with a holga lense…why not use a holga camera?

120 roll is expensive to shoot, unless you develope yourself, so the affordability is not so true, but, ya, it won’t be considered a ‘holga photograph’…but i’d like to see.

It isnt cheating as there isnt a standard definition of lo-fi, however I think that if you put a lo-fi lens on a hi-tech digital body that has adjustable iso, a full range of shutter speeds, no light leeks, no winding on issues, no double exposure issues, metering etc etc etc then its not really lo-fi, it cant be.

If I really wanted holga/lomo type digital photos I’d just use one of the thousand fake photoshop actions on the interweb.

    Just my two cents

I agree about the idea that the Holga isnt just about the lens.

But the way Im looking at this is just an interesting digital lens. The fact is, it wont replicate a holga, but if you throw the whole Holga idea aside for a second, lets just pretend that the lens is just a random lens for a digital camera, not based on any Holga design, then it is definately something I’d love to see some pics from.

I would never consider a lens like this to be a replacement for a Holga. It would simply be another fun medium to add to the collection.
