Isle of Skye?

Has anyone here been up to the Isle of Skye before? My current contract looks like it’s ending a month early (but I still get 4 weeks notice pay :D thanks to my contract). I’m thinking of taking advantage of the unexpected time and money and heading up there assuming I can get a few days of good weather. I saw it being featured on BBC’s Nature’s Calander and the thoughts of being in the “Highlands”, having Golden Eagles and White-Tailed Eagles all over is pretty appealing.
I checked out Easons for guides and have googled all over but not really found what anyone though of the place. We’ve a good mix of people here so I was hoping someone might have been and could share some knowledge/experiences.
SteveFEMemberI’ve been a couple of times, didn’t get any pics worth a candle though ;) The weather’s notorious, but this is the best time of year for light etc. In summer it can get very hazy when it’s not covered in cloud. Lucky sod if you can spend a month there?you should get a few nice shooting days.
You need a car! It might only be an island but it’s really way too big to cycle anywhere. You could hitch, but if the locals still like a drink the way they did the last time I was there, you’d be taking your life in your hands ;)
Don’t miss sites:
The Cuillins go without saying.
Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing (especially Quiraing, it’s one of the spookiest bits of mountain scenery anywhere in the British Isles, great if you can get a bit of mist but not too much).
Talisker Bay is great for beachscapes (black sand!)
Loch Coruisk is awesome if you can walk in there (involves negotiating the Bad Step on the way, a very thin ledge above the surging sea).Luke PortessParticipanti used to do a fair old bit of shoots ( when i was assisting a few years back ) up in the highlands – its like irelands west coast with mountains and loving beaches with the sea thrashing against it. weather is kind of the same too, four seasons in one day – when the sun shines up there it is quite breathtaking. i stayed here once http://www.flodigarry.co.uk/ its on skye …. a little pricey but well worth it…lovely traditional place and in the heart of it all. kyle of lochalsh joins to skye via a bridge … i stayed here once also … can’t remember the hotel.
this place is nice … http://www.plockton.com/ its on the mainland but really nice, i stayed there but i can’t remember the hotel.
i’ve done that whole west side of coast and there are some lovely spots, i’d recommend a car and driving up it, ullapool is a good place to stay also.
hope this helps !
cheers
lukejoe_elwayParticipantThanks folks. I’ll hopefully get a week up there assuming my contract ends this Friday – I’ve been told that’s a 90% certainty (am hoping it does too cos I haven’t had time off in an age). I’ll likely fly into Glasgow, rent a car and head on up. I’m keeping an eye on the forecasts at the moment. Fingers crossed I’ll get to go.
Deffo want to do some landscape (I hardly ever do) and even just seeing the birds of prey would be a treat, let alone the tiny chance of getting a shot.
