It’s the holiday season

I went abroad once. It was alright like, but I’m happier at home.
I didn’t get my first passport till I was 39. It’s not that I’m uninterested
in foreign countries, I just don’t particularly want to go to them.
What really REALLY sickens my arse is holiday one-upmanship.“When I was in New zealand….”
“Oh… you haven’t been to Macchu Picchu…..??”
They’ll be up against the wall with the baseball cap brigade, mark my words.

I am with Pete on this one. I try to only visit countries that used to be coloured pink on the map of the world.

That gives you plenty of scope (and some big air fares too).
You could do a whistlestop tour – Iran, Pakistan, Zimbabwe,
Jamaica, Zambia…. I hope you’ve got body armour.

OK, I’ll take the bait.
I’ll tell you, this attitude is what sickens my arse.
I like to travel. I spend my money on camera equipment and travelling and there’s a huge list of places I want to go to.
Yes I talk about them, because its part of my life. I’m not going to not bring them up in front of people just because it might piss someone off. It’s like a new girlfriend insisting you don’t mention the previous 5 years of your life because she doesn’t like your ex.
I don’t care about one-upmanship. But I’m not going to hide the fact that I was in various places around the world, because I’m damn proud of it.
There’s someone in our camera club who thinks the same, and I’m almost embarressed now to bring photos for competitions that I might have taken abroad because it gets commented on “Oh here’s another one now, that wasn’t taken in Kilkee was it?”.
But damn you all PeteTheBloke. Don’t just assume that I’m trying to be better than you if I mention something about my travels. Its a sign of some sort of shoulder related chip issue if you ask me.
I can think of one friend who has been to a different foreign country twice a
year for 20 years or more. He barely mentions it, but when he does it’s just
a normal part of his conversation. I’ve got another friend, who has a few pals
around for dinner and then gets out a projector and shows off his holiday pics.
I call that boasting. Sorry.Now I’m mighty fond of both of them, but I’m much happier with the first when it
comes to chatting about holidays.I also don’t like it when people start telling me how much they earn, how much their
house is worth, how fast their new car goes or how much it cost or how clever their
kids are. If I ever do it myself I cringe with embarrassment as soon as my wife tells
me off. We’re all subject to the “sin” of pride at times.As for you, Jody, I’m sure you’re very sensitive to other people’s boredom threshold.

I call that boasting. Sorry.Well fair enough. Friend number 2 there just isn’t cool. I’m definitely in the Friend number 1 bracket, but the tendency is to paint all travellers with one brush (Pavee Point anyone?)

At last – I feel normal. I’m 39 and don’t have one either. Thanks Pete…now that I’m like you I feel, well…normal.
We should form some sort of club Wonka. I bet we’d get a few other folks

you have time until February 2010 as far as I am concerned. ;)Had a passport since I was 16.
Had 2 passports since I was 27.
Maybe I should try for a third …
