After shooting this image in harsh overhead sunny lighting, I was pleased to discover that the statue’s features were enhanced by the otherwise brutal lighting conditions!
Thanks Aoluain, I’ve shot this a few times but never captured it as well. I saw a photo of it recently in a book published about 25 years ago where it looked much sharper than anything I’d captured. I had started to think it had deteriorated over the ensuing 25 years, but couldn’t figure out why it would have suddenly done that when it has survived 1500 years or more. All down to the light then. I’ll be watching out for other situations where the commonly accepted rules don’t apply!
The lighting is just perfect to bring out the features of the carving. But I do think your shot would be even better if you had moved a little to your left, so as to avoid that tree in the background which I find a little intrusive.
