A friend of mine in Cork offered me a wedding job recently.
The wedding takes place in April, I won’t be available to do the job.
If anyone is based in Cork or doesn’t mind travelling down please get in touch.
Their payment is comparitively low-budget, they’re offering 300-400 for the day. Apparently they can’t a pro for this.
This job would probably best suit a student, like I said if anyone’s interested get in touch and we’ll sort something out

€300-400 may sound reasonable to a non Photographer for 1 days work. But that is when they have not considered equipment costs, experience and most of all the fact that often there is a lot of post work required often increasing the amount of working hours per shoot considerably.

I don’t know if they have thought about it, but perhaps paying for a photographer for a half day and then relying on friends and family for the rest.

Simply put €400 for 2-3 days work is loss making

If a non pro does it, they should be worried about insurance issues, what happens if a tripod or light falls over when a kid runs past and hits them?

Is there food paid for? expences?

Finally, I would be rather unhappy to give out non prosesed photos so the client could do it themselves. otherwise people might get a get a poor impression of you.

Yes 300 to 400 is not much but if I was starting out trying to get a portfolio together to become a wedding photographer I would take every opportunity I could get. Even if it is working for chicken feed for the first few months and basically being used. Its an opportunity to learn the ropes…

I would think long term, your building a portfolio and getting experience that will hopefully up your level. When you do get your first well paid job then hopefully this work experience will stand to you and will help get more well paid work…

I know Mark and he is a sound bloke.

The couple obviously know they aren’t going to get Denis Reggie for the money they are offering, so forget the 3 days processing and all the other stuff.

There is a recession on and what’s someone to do if they cant afford the full IPPA credential tooting pro with the Italian hand made leather album with matching briefcase??

No one doubts that Mark is’nt a nice bloke but the bottom line is that the printing
and making up of an album is really the end result of many days work on the computer
and this is what couples that ask for a cheap photographer ca’nt understand.
Any photographer worth his salt will do the best job possible and you ca’nt forget the
3 days processing because thats what it takes to process the amount of
photographs that many pro photographers take at weddings nowadays.
As I asked in an earlier post…what are the couple expecting for that amount of
money…do they want 50 photos or so ? we just do’nt know….are they looking for
    a smaller 20 page album ie.8″ x 6″ or what….obviously there is a recession on and
many photographers like myself have to cut back on costings to get customers
interested but €300-€400 for a wedding is a bit low….on another forum today
someone was looking for a wedding photographer to come to the wedding and
take the pictures and then hand over the Raw files to him and he would
do the rest…as I said, we know times are tough but they are’nt that tough…yet.

There is an opportunity here. 3-400 Euros would give the couple 30 edited (quick edits) without too much bother. No need for albums or location visits etc. Not all weddings have to be 3 day jobs. If we don’t want the job, we decline, it doesn’t make it wrong to ask.

I agree that not every wedding needs to be a 3 day job, there was a post from way back how quick it was to edit 1,000 or so photos with some claiming that they could do it on a very short time, I would think that if you lived near by 3 hrs shooting the wedding say 200 shots nothing special run of the mill stuff (THE COUPLE WOULD NOT EXPECT THE BEST FOR THIS PRICE nor should they) edit in that quick manner of the 1,000 plus wedding – then spend lets say 3 hrs basic editing plus say 2hrs travel thats a total of 8 hrs for 400 euros . put on CD post to them… aint that setup worth it?? sure you cant make a killing on every job those days are well gone

If Mark could get back on and tell what the couple want for €300-€400 we could
then give more a informative answer to the question…at the moment we are
assuming this, that, and the other without knowing…myself included.

just remember if you are a pro and earning over €37,500 per annum you have to charge VAT. so that €400 gets a lot closer to €300.

anyway I and others have suggested it: why not Hire a pro for 3 hours or so get all the important shots and then there may be a geek or two with some decent kit taking some extra shots I was at two weddings over the past 2 weeks and brough my camera and fired off a few shots. I gave them to the couples for nothing but I was not under preasure and I did not have to producce but the shots will end up in there final albums.

Can you imagine the night before your wedding hoping for good weather and praying that a geek with a good camera shows up.

The couple could ask the priest to call out over the mic after the ceremony –

“Any geeks with good cameras please report to the alter, God has called upon your assistance. Preferably four eyed and spotty. Thank you”.
