Like father like son?
Great expression, pity bout the mic covering his face. The image is a bit monotone(flat?) for my liking too, I mean that he could be lifted from the background a bit more with a shallower depth of field, or a more focused flash beam. Maybe its something that could be done in PS.
As a musician I would be happy to have a shot like this presented to me (if I was a musician)

Hi Sean,
I greatly appreciate you stopping by & taking the time to reply.
Your comments are well made.
I have taken some photographs of gigs before (mostly film up ’til now)
& normally use available light. The subjects have normally been fairly famous people
so the pics were valuable to me as a record of the event.
I must admit I never really thought about the technicalities
of the process. I was at a concert & took a few shots.
This was one of Jonathans first gigs (a singer/songwriter club in Wexford).
He asked me along accompany him on one of his songs.
There was no stage lighting or backdrop of any sort.
When he started up I snapped a few shots for the record.
It was so dark I had to use flash.
Not great but a record of a nice moment in our lives.
BTW: We have ambitions to do some better stuff & I’ll make
sure to be more attentive to the technicalities.
We’ll see what happens.
Thanks again.
John.
Just for the record heres one of my efforts from many years ago.
Scanned from a 6×4 that was’nt stored in the best condition.
The gentleman on the left is the late great Jimmy Faulkner.
The man of the left ……. he’s quite well known.
