Here’s one from Jose’s recent gig at the Savoy in Cork. Lighting was touch & go, usually dark & moody (and foggy ) with bursts of ‘I know, let’s turn them up for a second’. Feedback appreciated.
jb7Participantthat’s a nice one Stas-
the colours look great,
and he’s nicely positioned low in the frame,
with that column of smoke rising up through the middle-
quite an unusual composition, but looks great-lovely detail everywhere that counts too-
The thing I might fiddle with (before setting it back to your values) is the saturation of the blue-
j
stasberMemberHi J – thanks.
And how very astute of you! The blue was causing me all sorts of bother. Please work away if you have any suggestions. Part of the issue is the softness caused by the smoke and the hard light.
Harry LimeParticipantB&W might be the answer? Those smoky textures in the background would look great.
You could also try to brighten his face a little – I think his intense expression warrants it.
Good work!
stasberMemberThanks, Harry.
I normally reserve a conversion for the ‘last resort’ types, or those moments which might warrant it – maybe this is one of them? Thanks for the suggestion. I think I still might have the same problem with the face though.
I did brighten it (honest!) but the shadow areas are pretty ‘thin’ overall (due to the smoke making the image soft) so left it at a level that didn’t start to show banding/noise in the other shadow areas – however you’ve just prompted me about something; Lightroom 2’s new localised correction tools, which I’ve not used yet – the above pic was done with global corrections – so I might give it some more time getting to grips with lightening his face only. Might also be able to pep it up a bit more.
Good ideas lads, keep them coming. ;)
jessthespringerParticipantI like this, love the intimate closeness and the atmosphere, interesting thoughts you have on the mono conversions. I don’t really have anything to suggest, would like to see what it looks like in mono though.
Love the framing, and wouldn’t I just love to take gig shots like this.
Sinead.
stasberMemberThank you Sinead. Might have a quick lash tonight at the mono, tho if things need fixing (per above) I might leave it until Sunday when I’ll have a bit more time to phaf about. Sure no harm in seeing what a conversion would look like.
RobMemberI like this a lot Stas, colour or mono (I did a quick conversion just to see).
Unusual composition – as already mentioned by Joseph – with so much space
at the top, but it works really well here. Nice work…Rob.
seanmcfotoMemberI suspect you’re trying too hard to make the skintones normal and blowing the blue channel in the process Stas. Maybe having the face warmer might reduce the effect of the blue.
I’m not particularly bothered by it myself.stasberMemberRob – Thanks for that, cheers. I’d like to see your conversion as I had a play around but didn’t get anything too inspiring. I remember the last conversion you did of one of mine (a musician’s portrait) came off pretty well.
Sean – You have the idea, but it was more trying to warm it up generally as the guitar plus the skin tones make for nice warmth against the blue (which isn’t blown or clipped btw) and to try bring the image out more a little, but the contrast causing some of the problem as already mentioned. Not had a chance to play afresh with it yet, using local corrections (LR2).
