Just a question about prints

Hi all, I have taken some great shots of the arrival over weekend last of our first grandchild in our family when she was just a few hours old. I am writing to ask about what is the optimum settings you look for to produce very good quality prints?

I have taken all the shots in RAW mode using my Canon 400D. Do I convert to jpeg and save at a certain dpi? Or can Tiff files be printed. What quality paper should be used? I’m just looking for some guidance, any of your advice would be greatly appreciated, as these will be a present for the new parents :D

    Many Thanks,

    Keith..

ok there a bit involved here, but put up with me till the end hopefully it will make sense

first, depending on where your printing you will prepare them slightly different

for example if your printing online, you will more than likely need to make JPGS

if you were printing with someone like me, i prefer to use tiffs, there no compression then, but much bigger files.

there are other issues you need to be aware of like colourspace (colour management) etc too

as for paper, well it kind of depends on the images as to what will work best and also how they are to be displayed.

you could also do things like have the pictures printed onto canvas etc.

if you need more help, give me a shout

Steve, thanks for your advice, I’d like to go with TIFF’s also, but the file sizes can be huge I know. I don’t think I’ll go down the online route, i’d prefer to have a photographer do them. As for dpi quality, is it safe for say 2000dpi?

The colourspace will probably be sRGB or adobe RGB. As for the paper, I’d be looking at maybe gloss, what other styles are available?

    Thanks Steve,

    Keith..

noooo you dont need 2000 dpi

it does depend on the printer

but when i am doing prints for people, my printer has a native resolution of 360 dpi. a good few others use 300DPI

in terms of paper there is a huge selection

i personally am not fussed on glossy, I normally use Fuji Pearl 290 for my print clients, but also there are some very nice matt papers too which do look very very good with black and white images

Lovely, i’d go with matt for the black and whites, could a 2000dpi shot print well on a 300-360dpi printer, is it compatable, or will I have to reduce the shots to this resolution?

Sorry for all the question’s Steve.

are you sure you mean dpi?

an image from my camera for example is

    4000 * 3000 pixels roughly

if the image was printed at 360 dpi it means without scaling it would be printed at 12*8 inches

if it was at 2000 dpi it would be 2 inches by 1.5

Steve, many thanks for your patience  I’ll see to it that the shots are 300 dpi.

    Once again,

    Thanks

Hey Steve, just a quick question about prices. I looked at your website, but there was no mention of the different prices for the various size prints or styles of prints (eg: matt, pearl etc). Is it possible to get a list of these prices? All the lads on boards recommend you highly, and if i was going down the print route, i might like to get them done by you.

    Cheers
