This thing is a lot heavier than i expected!!! should do me for many many years! must get a strap for it now. have the 804RC2 head also.cant wait to give it a go.
nfl-fanParticipantShe’s a good piece of equipment. Worth getting a tripod bag.
And a good piece of advice for anyone with a tripod… damp sand… from your local beaches… is not good for your tripod.
BMParticipantGood choice! Many years to enjoy!
My trusty 55 is over 10 years old and has stood up well to some terrible abuse. To be fair, I bought a bag for it after a while and that helped (teh bad is also useful for kneeling on when outdoors). In terms of maintenance, I sometimes blow air from a garage air line in around the leg clamps (to remove grit, sand, etc.) and sometimes spray some WD40 in the same clamps to keep moisture out. Sometimes the clamps need tightening, but that can be a delicate job not needed for a few years, so best to ask for advice.
The rubber feet are inclined to get left behind in muddy bogs. This can result in grit and rubbish up the insides of the tubes – causing the tubes to be sticky/gritty as you open them. Replace lost feet quickly or replace them entirely with spikes (part code 055SPK) – these also come with rubber covers for indoor use.
You should get years of trouble-free service from the tripod. For well into the future, the following might help:
The Manfrotto spares web site is at: http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/spareparts/site/manfrotto/cache/bypass
You can get a schematic of your tripod is at: http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/spareparts/site/manfrotto/pid/15132
Calumet Photo can provide the larger spares that you might need. Manfrotto smaller spoares are available by phoning a UK number: 0870 443 6843
nfl-fanParticipantfguihenParticipantexcellent, thanks for the advice guys. i just posted out of excitment, not expecting to get any response, but recieved two most helpful ones!
nfl-fanParticipantBMParticipantI also use a Manfrotto monopod – handy when you can’t get the tripod up or for longer walks. I use it as a walking stick as well – it’s great for balance on broken ground, crossing streams, holding back branches, etc.
I have a great spike on the end of it: Manfrotto 236. See: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Manfrotto-236-Spiked-Monopod-Foot_W0QQitemZ230191307282QQihZ013QQcategoryZ3325QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
Better stop all this talk of spikes now, in case people find out about me!
nfl-fanParticipantYou can pickup a Manfrotto monopod pretty cheap at MyMemory… good online store, highly recommended:

BMParticipant£14 for a Manfrotto monopod is great value – why wouldn’t you use one at least as a walking stick with the facility to attach a camera for occaisional shots.
I have to admit that my monopod is a bit heavier than the 790 – but so am I!

Any recommendation on a bag? Make/model/where to buy?
thanks.
BMParticipantBMParticipantpaulParticipantDo I look for “Generic tripod bag” or what am I looking for?
I have a cheapy tripod that came with it’s only little bag, which was handy. Now I need a bag for my Manfrotto 055xProB.
nfl-fanParticipantAny brand will do, doesn’t have to be Manfrotto branded, just so long as it fits.
Manfrotto bags do not come cheap e.g. http://www.mymemory.co.uk/memory/Manfrotto/Modo/Bag/Tripod/Backpack. This particular model is probably a little excessive.
Before buying my Manfrotto I had a Calumet brand tripod which came with it’s own bag which I now use for my Manfrotto.

You could just buy a really cheap full size 7dayshop.com branded tripod which includes a bag and then just use the bag for your Manfrotto. Just check the dimensions of the tripod vs. the bag in advance.
