Just saw a Buzzard AND a Peregrine on a kill

I decided to go into work late today so I cold avoid heavy traffic. The plan was to get an hour or two in Belfast Harbour Reserve beside the office.I was out by the coast and was getting some in flight seagull shots. I think I got a few nice ones … I’ll see tomorrow when I process them. The reserve (proper) opened at 09:00 so I went on in. It has a lough with a few wee islands (to use the local parlance) :)
I was chatting with a retired bird watcher about cameras, the reserve, places to vist and stuff while watching the water. I saw a heron and waas watching about it. Then I spotted what it was looking at.
In front of it was something smaller, hunched down and pecking at the area around it’s feet. It was way too far out, even for a 1000mm lens. I had a hunch that I knew what it was. The colouring and manner was distinct. Plus, only a few minutes earlier, all the birds in the vicinity had panicked for some unknown reason. I took a shot and zoomed in on the LCD. It was a Peregrine Falcon eating a Lapwing. It was my first ever Peregrine sighting. It was eating a Lapwing while the Heron watched. I don’t have any shots but it was a great sight.
As we were looking at it, and I was packing my bag to go to work, a Buzzard flew overhead, screaming its lungs out. I think I got a shot of it while overhead.
I am so going to spend Friday mornings in this place before work for the rest of this contract I’m on. I’m absolutely buzzing right now.

Sounds like you had a good morning!
joe_elwayParticipantThe “I don’t have any shots” … the bird is no more than a few pixels. I sure wouldn’t waste time to process it or share it. It was used only to get a closer look via the LCD and digital zoom.
:-)
I’m still buzzing. My plan is to head out there on Sunday if the weather holds up. I was thinking about Belfast zoo but that plan just went on ice. This morning was just too amazing. BTW, any birders might be interested to know that there are 2 “Green Teals” or something there. They’re American birds that got lost during migration/storms that shouldnt be here.
If anyone does have an EF 1000 to spare for a day …

looks like you have found a wee bit of paradise (now you understand the lingo). It sounds like a great spot.
Belfast Zoo is always on ice (if going wrap up well) boy does it be freezing if the weather is anything like todays there would be a chance of frost bite and sunburn.
Enjoy Sunday and I will PM you later.
