Kenko 1.4 converter

I bought a Kenko 1.4 converter supposedly for use with my 70-200 and the 300 f4 lenses. The canon version only works with certain lenses and is considerably more expensive. To my complete surprise, this kenko version works with any lens whatsoever and it retains AF.
What I dont understand is that I tried it with my Canon 85mm 1.8 and not only did it AF, I was also able to use aperture of 1.8. Can anyone explain that? I always thought you lose a stop with a converter? With the 70-200 f4, I definitely lose f4 as it starts at 5.6, but why not with the 85mm 1.8?

Kenko converter! Grab one quick………… :D

I have a Kenko as well and am more than happy with it. The lens aperture thing could be due to the differing chips in the lenses themselves but I don’t know an awful lot about Canon lenses :)

Thats my experience also. Have you taped the pins as described here ?

The Kenko 1.4x converter is great. Its about half the price of the Canon one and works with nearly every EF lens not like the Canon one because of its protruding element. Optically it is as good as the Canon on crop cameras but I have heard that on FF it is just a tad softer at the edges. By the way Kenko extension tubes are great too.

    Ross,

What do you make of the quality difference using the convertor.

I use the 2 x canon and I’m stuffed if I can see the difference!

Be interested to know how you think the kenko one fairs…

Just got one today for my D200 and to go with my 80-200 2.8.
Seems to be fully functioning. Can’t wait to get out and find something to shoot with it :)

Does anyone know of a 1.4 that will work with the Sigma 24-70?
