kilimanjaro Travel Question

Hi guys
dont know if this is the right location for this questions .. if not .. apologies…I am hoping to Climb Kili next summer… in mid to late July all going well with some friends… and then go on a safari for a week or ten day into the Serengeti and hopefully… the ngorongoro crater…
Now I am into the photography as well.. hence the post and question…
Has someone done something similar.. and if so .. what sort of gear did you take.. we are hoping to do Kili first so i dont need long or big lens for this .. and seeing as you are hiking with them they say to pack light and so on … but i definitely want my SLR and some form of a tripod as well that i might get some pictures with.. but if i bring the large lens is it safe to leave in Nairobi or somewhere else when doing the hike and collect it after… any suggestions greatly appreciated.
On the safari side of things as well.. again and thought or suggestions would be much appreciated.. there is so much to see and do out there and we are only starting to look into now at the moment.. but the gear is my first priority for the trip.. then I will work the where …
Thanks
KevthefizzParticipantCheck out the Lonely Planet forum link below. You should find lots of people who have been to the locations you mention.

markcapilitanParticipantThere’s an old post here somewhere from one of the members who described all his safari experience…just do a search. For my safari in the Mara, I brought 2 digi cameras, 1 film camera, a 500mm, 70-200, 20-35mm lens, and a 20GB portable HD for storing cards. Whatever amount of pics you think you’ll take, triple it for the actual amount! I was on safari for 6 days and used about 18GBs.
Basically bring the longest lenses you have for the safari. Take what you can up Kili! I wouldn’t personally bother with a tripod. Get yourself a beanbag for the safari though, and fill it with rice when you get over…for leaning on in the vehicle.johnson76ParticipantThanks man .. that advice sounds cool… just got to get a 500mm lens now …. rob borrow or steal eh :D
Yeah i have most of the rest of it now and am looking forward to it alright.. just need to tie down some loose ends….

ClickParticipantDid this trip a few years back, and it is a photographers dream…..
When doing Kili, you will only need to carry your camera in your day bag, as there is really no need to carry a tripod or zoom during the day.
Put your tripod and zoom in your main rucksac as this will be carried by the porters. Using your tripod in the evenings is a must for the wonderful sunsets, and for some fun shots at night.
As for the Safari, take loads of memory, and whatever zooms you have. The drivers will stop any time you ask, and be ony too happy to do so.
You will not be dissapointed with amount of shots you will get. Early morning is the best time for shooting as most wildlife are out hunting. With a bit of luck, you might get the chance to see a kill.
The sunrise and sunset on the Serrengeti are just magical.
If possible, book your trip to co inside with a full moon as this adds a special magic to the trip.
I f you want any info on the trip, just pm me and we can talk a bit more.
Best of luck with the trip, you will love it.
