Killarney Lake / Castle
-
hotjohn01Participant
Ok, so I just started a beginner photoshop course on Thursday mornings, and thought I’d post my first attempt on here for critique.
Thanks in advance guys, JohnBefore
And After
hotjohn01ParticipantseanruiseilMemberIt seems fairly quiet around here, alright!
A few comments –
The subject has great potential. I would keep working it.
The light at the time the shot was taken was uninteresting (middle of the day?) and so you were up against it when it came to processing.
The castle ended up dead centre after cropping. Don’t forget your rule of thirds. The cloud top right is a little heavy. I think I would back that off a bit to restore some balance.
I like the contrast enhancements to the water, the trees and the castle.
Hope this helps.
Sean.hotjohn01ParticipantIt did Sean, thanks a million, I tried to line up the waters edge to the bottom horizontal 1/3 and the peak of the mountain to right vertical one.
I’ll give it another go tonight as regards the castle cos i suppose that is the focal point alright :D
Thanks again,
JohnBMParticipantBe careful of the horizon not being adequately intersected – the castle seems to touch them mountain outline.
Did you use a tripod – that might help to improve the focus – a bit of camera shake?
Start using layers in your processing – copy teh background layer and work on that to give teh clouds a bit of punch.
Rule of thirds might have helped – the water seems to bisect the picture and there’s not a lot going on in teh water.
Nice scene and a worthy post.
hotjohn01ParticipantNo tripods i’m afraid, handheld from a boat so camera shake was a given :)
shutterbugParticipantAgree with previous poster, a bit top heavy, and a bit too much water in front,
I would try a few different crops to see which looks the best, I would put the Castle
in the left middle third I think, but thats just me who know sweet F.A. about
photoshop anyway :)Noely FParticipantRoss Castle is it? Its very hard to shoot when the lighting isnt the best, then you have to enhance it in PS to make it interesting :D Been there done that meself :D The mountain makes a great backdrop so try and get in closer next time, or shoot just after sunrise or sunset.
I’m of the opinion that if something isn’t there in the first place Photoshop doesn’t help.If there are good elements, tones etc. in the image then
you have all the ingedients to enhance the image in PS. I’m not a landscape shooter but I just thought I’d add my thoughts on the matter, there are many landscape pros on the site who are far more qualified to advise you
