    Hi Angela.

Nice place – and a nice scene. I passed through it a few weeks ago.

I think the composition would have been stronger if you had not had the railway bridge in the dead centre. I would have it left of the frame – and cutting out the house on the far left.

It might have been better also to get down to the water’s edge – and try include some ‘foreground’ – like marsh reeds, water lilies, flowers, a boat perhaps? Not also possible I know – and not always present either.

It may sound boring to stick with the most common rules of good photographic composition ( rule of thirds, foreground interest, leading lines etc) – but its best stick to them for most occasions….until you are a master at them – then you can break the rules. If you’re not familiar with them – Google it.

As for the post processing – in a word – Dreadful.

Subtle HDR can be nice – when the subject matter is right.

Here you have unnatural colours and some ‘odd’ Halos going on in spots.
HDR also lends itself to a ‘lack’ of contrast – as your pulling back the highlights – and bringing out the shadows – leading to a flat image.

Not too long ago I was only submitting HDR here – thinking I could compensate for lack of good light and composition for some smart processing.

    It doesn’t work.

While I still do ‘bracket’ my shots with filters – I much prefer now to blend the images using layer masks. You will move to this step next and never look back.

Hope I haven’t spoilt your day.

Cheers for the reply and comments Brendan.

Unfortunately, I the areas below the bridge were closed off to pedestrians during Puck.

The pic was recently sold to two couples from the Killorglin area, they spotted it on my website.

I have to say I agree with Brendan , the HDR processing has ruined what could have been a nice shot.
