Killurin Bridge – Long Exposure
-
Alan RossiterParticipant
This was taken today with the use of a P156 Cokin ND filter. It is supposed to add 13 f-stops to your exposure but it was more like 18. The EXIF data is still attached but I have it below the image anyway.
SonyA700 with Sigma 24-70, F2.8

24mm f5.0
61 second exposureConverted to B&W with PS CS3, noise reduction and selective vignetting applied and sharpened with LAB mode.
Alan
lousyParticipantThat looks like the best of your efforts so far Alan.
It has an early misty morning look to it or something like that.
I like it though…. Is there something going on in the top rh corner????Lovely image.
Pat
jb7ParticipantThat looks good-
13 stops, 18 stops-
not much of a difference really-
and considering the effect you’re looking for,
its like getting 50% extra, free-Looks like you might have been quite lucky with the wind-
Don’t suppose you’ve considered this technique for your street series?
j
BrickeeParticipantAlan RossiterParticipant13 stops, 18 stops-
not much of a difference really-Well at 1/500sec 13 stops equates to 16seconds, 18 stops equates to 5 minutes 32 seconds. The result would be similar but my patience, with the exposure and noise removal, would not last the distance. I can’t see this being useful unless you wanted to eliminate people from the shot. I’ve seen it done but not what I’d like. The wind was there but the detail at this scale doesn’t give that impression.
Pat – yeah, the mast isn’t pleasing but I went so far before I remembered to remove it, I left it there. I like the effect but it’s so much work I wouldn’t dare print so this filter may be short lived! Thanks for the comments.
Alan
mgstParticipantMartinParticipantVery nice Alan. If this was a square shot with the same fore ground just more sky showing movement it would be a cracker, but very nice as it is well done
M
Alan RossiterParticipantCheers Mick, Martin.
I’ll be back to this one but not with this filter. Time to go back to the welders mask methinks and go for the square! At 40c it’s almost disposable.
RobertoMemberPeteTheBlokeMemberNice effect. Did you have a colour cast from the filter before making it mono?
And just to be pernickety: 1/500s becomes 16s with 13 stops and 8m 45s with 18 stops
by my calculations. You could end up using your camera as a seismograph at that rate.Alan RossiterParticipantYeah, there was either a blue cast from severe under exposure or a light blue with some magenta when getting closer to the proper exposure. I’m sure when I create a custom WB this won’t be a problem but, as you rightly point out, 8 minutes is a long time for an exposure on bright sunlight in anyones book. Maybe I’ll take shots of the sun  .
Nfl has kindly given me a loan of the ND110 at 10 stops so I’ll give that a go to see if this hits my spot.
Alan
RobMemberThat’s a stunning picture Alan, regardless of 13 stops, 18 stops, full stops or bus stops…
Wish it was one of mine…
Rob.
BeamCatcherParticipantHi Alan – Cool shot!
I thought I’d point you to another possible filter you might find interesting.

All honour and credits goes to the Tom Kaszuba’s shot in case you want to drop by and check what the result can look like:

DenverDollParticipantBeautiful work Alan~~
The exposure is fabulous…
And I know I am talking about something I have no business talking about…but it would a dream of a photo without that crane or whatever it is in the right.Alan RossiterParticipantThanks Rob, Shar, Ivar.
Ivar – I had considered that initially but being the conservative that I am I thought I’d go for the Cokin kit so that I could expand the range. Fools and their money, as they say. I have a loan of the ND110 from nfl and as soon as I can get out my front door without kids in tow I’ll be giving it a try. I reckon this will be the next purchase if it works OK or I may stick to the weld mask glass.
Denverdoll – the mast I forgot. Too busy over working the shot before I realised I’d left it in. Next time, or in the normal exposure shot it is removed.
