Kit Camera

I bought a camera kit late last year, part of a magazine series called science for adults (called Science for Adults) which makes science based kits. I just got around to assembling it today. It seems to be creating a mini buzz in lo-fi circles, one other PI-er has one. Its a TLR.

The kit pretty involved, 6 pages of assembly instructions, luckily the diagrams are fairly easy to follow (as I can’t read the text).
The shutter was difficult to get working and needed an ad hoc modification.

It also has a “sports finder”, I think the designers were taking the p*ss, but the idea is cool.
There are some straightforward mods suggested swapping the placement of the aperture plate and lens to change the amount of vignette. I’ve seen beautiful very shallow dof macro style photos by someone who took the aperture plate out altogether.

Here is a video of assembly someone posted if you are interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdTtl085KyU&NR=1

    Voila: The Gakkenflex

And so some photos taken today between my flat and the photo-lab, shot as a quick test.
It has one aperture and shutter speed.

#5 (I need to track down this light leak, it occurred (or half of it) in a number of other photos not shown.

    I also found a stereo-pinhole camera; I haven’t assembled that one yet.
    Thanks for looking,

    Thanks for the comment Angelo,

I think it has some potential, and although my photos look “toy camera”,
other aesthetic can be got from it like this pic I came across (with a modified Gakkenflex)

    Sounds Good Martin, very interesting!!

The results look great, the dreamy holga type blur on the edges is nice.
There doesnt seem to be much distortion and looks from the compressed
    images quite sharp!

What type film does it take, 135 or 120?

Cool. Seen this on the filmwasters forum too.
Really like the look of these and the aspect is different.

Looking forward to seeing more. I have a very similar leak on the Lubitel. Does the frame number window have a cover? I thought maybe that’s were mine was coming from, but, I can’t be sure.

    And, Ooooh, Stereo Pinhole… Awesammme!

    Alan: 135 film

Sinead: no frame window, just a half turn of the film winder to get to the next frame.
It was the results from the guys at filmwasters that inspired me to get my finger out and construct it.

Btw: Its Stereo Pinhole and Pinhole Panorama Camera! ( http://otonanokagaku.net/magazine/vol14/ )
    I’ll get to it someday…

    Cheers,

There is a Japanese 35mm TLR called the “Blackbird” which is very similar, it seems to be a very well made toy camera (I used a camera by the same company at a PI toy camera day)
But this is slightly different as it is a kit. In the shops the magazine is 2500 JPY, about 20 Euro.

It is a piece of crap but does teach you about how a camera is made, and is open to lots of modifications, there is some interesting stuff produced by it.

yes, forgot to mention, pictures look good from it-
the vignette on the last looks a little odd, as it might appear to be focused at the closest distance-

I had a disposable camera developed recently, 10 years out of date, but pix looked ok-
completely different quality from the lens though,
it was less obviously lo-fi, and was equally sharp into the corners-

Martin, that looks great, the pictures from it are smashing. So how do we go about getting one? Or two even? I’d be very interested in getting a couple if possible. Why can’t we get this kind of thing here for the feeble minded. We’re not all like JB and need the simple Ladybird samples rather than the advanced Mecano. Is there a website?

    There are online shops such as http://www.japanexposures.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=363″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;

but I try and get one [edit: or two], I think there are still some in shops near where I live, I’ll check today.
I could do this as long as we used registered delivery. I would do it all at cost, so it should be a lot cheaper.

    let me know….

    Hi Martin,
I’d definitely be interested in this. If I could put my name down for two (or even three as long as I don’t leave any one else short) that would be brilliant. If this is going to happen then let me know about postage and how I could organize payment. Next time you’re in Seafield I’ll line up a string of pints.
