Hi I been out shooting photos again. This time I was on Knocknarea in Strandhill, Co. Sligo. Sooo beautiful.

emcnParticipant#1 – i like this . The lone tree theme can be overdone but i think this is a fresh approach. My only comment is that the grass in the foreground is out of focus and distracts from the image’s effect. Also, the sky is fairly bland and could probably be cropped out without taking away from the image’s effect. I love the way the tree follows the hill line/slope, but the background landscape is horizontal. nice effect.
#2 – Not too sure about this one. The path forms a nice lead-in line, but there’s nothing to really lead into. There’s nothing of intrerest in the landscape as such and the sky isn’t dramatic enough (I think) to compensate.
#3 – It would be interesting to see this in B&W, maybe with the sky pumped up a bit to add to the drama. As it is, the sky is fairly non-descript and the rock doesn’t present sufficient impact. The rocks in the foreground add to the foreground detail in a nice way.

Janine87ParticipantRight okay thanks for your comments and opinions anyway. Im still in progress like and dont really have much time to read my “understanding exposure” book so I usually use automatic instead of manual settings! Easiest and nicest way to be honest. Most of my photos turn out crap when I use manual!
PitmaticMemberDont worry most peoples do :)
I dont think there is anything wrong in what your doing remember critique is just an opinion and it can be wrong so always take it with a pinch of salt.
That said :)
#1 sometimes with a single “thing” type image getting up close is the way to go maybe lower to the ground and then postion the background such that you might get something interesting.
#2 I would agree about there being a lack of a focal point to lead away to but i think your thinking in the right direction I look at the path and wonder if I walked to the edge there could I lookd down the path and make an image with the tree covered hill beyond it?
#3 The basic idea of this is ok but I think the camera has focused on the foreground and not the rock I would look at the cameras manual and see how it selects focus points and see if you can overide it?.
Just an observation dont hit me! :)
Janine87Participanthaha dont worry I will not hit you. I appreciate all your opinions! And I take them with me and try to make it better the next time! Im not using manual settings a lot to be honest.
miki gParticipantHi Janine. I like these. I think the simplicity of #1 really works. #2 I think would really work well in a panorama but I will agree with the lads about the path. I enjoy going for walks in the hills so I can relate to the way you envisioned (if that’s a real word) the scene. A slightly different angle off the path could improve this or an object on the path to give foreground interest. As for your metering, I can’t get it right even on auto so don’t worry too much about it. I find if you overexpose it’s easier to recover the image during processing than underexposing. Nice shots overall.
aoluainParticipantHi Janine,
These are nice and an improvement on your last batch!
It might be interesting to take a shot on Auto and then switch to Manual
to re shoot the same shot and compare the results, you still get a pic you are happy with
in the auto and will help you learn from the Manual one . . .just an idea.
good to see you getting out there.
