L-Bracket for Camera
-
NujmanParticipant
Hi Guys,
Wondering have any of you used this “L-Bracket” on tripod for vertical shots. https://www.ppsna.com/product_info.php/cPath/36_61/products_id/699″ onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;I am taking a mix of Landscape /Portrait/Vertical using my tripod and thought would this bracket be handy for changing from Landscape to Vertical using my “workhorse” 24mm-70mm.
It’s no problem when using the 70mm-200mm as it swivels on it’s own column on tripod.Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Have a good day.
NujmanpelagicMemberNujman,
Take a good look at the Really Right Stuff site. They do a great job of custom engineering each plate to the camera. They seem to spend a lot of effort on how attach cables, eytc. They also fit really well handheld. Currently I have them on a Nikon D300, Canon SD940 and Canon S95. The brackets fit so well that I never take them off the cameras. It seems crazy but the tiny ultra compact still fits in the pockets of my Levis. Yup they are expensive. But the return is in ease of use. And yes, last comment, their brackets have huge torsional strenght.
NujmanParticipantPelagic,
Very grateful thank you so much.
Now question- as you are using L-Bracket on Nikon when you have bracket attached and camera on Landscape do you have to disconnect the L Bracket from the camera to move to vertical/Portrait please. How does that work?
I have looked at the Bracket but I can’t see where it connects on tripod when doing Portrait/Vertical??
Have you to unscrew from tripod going from Landscape to Portrait/Vertical shoot??
Sorry for all the questions but as your are very experienced using this bracket I know you have all the answers.
Thank you,
NujmanpelagicMemberNot much of a photographer but I do know about L-brackets.
These are built as an L so the bracket goes onto the camera once. Using an allen key wrench = very strong and never comes loose unless you use the wrench. The bottom of the L is Arca-Swiss as is the side. To change from landscape to portrait just open the Arca clamp on your tripod head and reattach using the other side of the bracket. The RRS brackets have alignment marks for the centerline of your lens mount. One mark for landscape and another for portrait. Therefore, if you aligned the bracket when installing it on the camera, it’s kids play to align when you change from landscape to portrait or back.
This video tells it all, except he doesn’t cover alignment while screwing the plate to the camera body. http://reallyrightstuff.com/WebsiteInfo.aspx?fc=42 That’s in the owners guide that comes with the plate.
I’m not sure which is really better RRS or Kirk, but those two companies are thought to make the best plates. From the tripod up, I use all RRS. If my mentors had used Kirk I’d probably use those. But RRS is way ahead when it comes to beautiful machining and after sales support.
Do you know about the standard Arca-Swiss plate that all of these L-brackets use? Are you mounting on top of a pan head or ballhead. Arca is a standard, whereas Manfrotto and others have proprietary proprietary connection plates.
Drill down from this page: http://reallyrightstuff.com/WebsiteInfo.aspx?fc=76 It explains everything and has great pictures of how Arca-Swiss works.
pelagicMemberRead this as well. I’ve been there his recommenations are spot on.

NujmanParticipantPelagic,
I thank you so much you are a real Pro when it come to L Bracket Information that i can say for sure.
I have to get myself L-Bracket immediately can’t for the life of me wonder how the heck I managed without one of these it seems to make real photo shoot easy, comfortable & secure.
Thank you so much.
Very much appreciated now I have to source to see if we have a supplier here in Eire you pay big charges (Customs & Courier)if outside Europe.
Have a great week,
NujmanpelagicMemberRRS normally sells direct.
I’d check in with Michael Conn. He might stock one of European manufacture. But there are so many models that he might not have something for your body. And great fit is the whole deal with L-plates. Damned, I looked at his site and I don’t see anything but Gitzo, Manfrotto, etc. Maybe some dealers in the UK.
I get my stuff shipped to a friend in Boston who posts it to me as a gift. = avoids the tax man. Do you have someone in the States?
NujmanParticipantPelagic,
No I don’t have contact in the US but I am checking to see where in the UK or indeed our own country Eire who might distribute these products.
Again thank you for your help and will keep you posted as to how I get on.
You have a good week.
NujmanseanyMemberNujmanParticipantpelagicMemberI was in Dublin yesterday and spoke with Michael Conn. According to him there is no source for these in Ireland.
seanyMemberKirk brackets work same as RSS they also need Arca Swiss tripod heads.
NujmanParticipantpelagicMemberNujman,
In the last few days I’ve decided to move to M4/3 and I’m selling all of my Nikon kit. What camera are you putting the L-bracket on? I have both D300 and D70.
And I forgot to post but there are several Kirk shops in the UK. Try http://www.speedgraphic.co.uk/ They are good to deal with.
