Lahinch Castle Ruin

Took this yesterday after a trip to Lahinch County Clare.

This is set on the golf course there. I used a 2:1 crop
to get rid of the boring foreground detail.

The day was windy but a good day sky wise for photos.
Great cloud detail to be captured.

    Thats a fine shot Alan,
It has a little IR feel about it,
I think the crop suits it,
    well done,
Did ya get to play a round?

    Hi Alan,

    This is a nice composition.
As you say the sky is very good.

The clear part of the sky might be a little black in places but maybe not. :?

    Well presented.

    John.

Hi Alan. I like this. The crop works very well. The sky is impressive and works lovely as the backdrop to the ruin. Well done.

    thanks guys,

Paul, no dont play golf. the nearest i ever came to playing
    was pitch and putt !!

John, The sky is very dark all right which I think is passable,
I wanted to create more of a contrast between the ruin and the sky
which meant darkening it, as miki g mentions.

    Thanks miki g

Very nice Alan, thought it looked IR also!

The composition and all works for me, but I just can’t help feeling that the sky is a little too dark which makes the castle seem almost too contrasting and possibly slightly fake.

Don’t know if it’s my monitor but I’m also seeing some slight banding in the sky above the castle (if banding is the right term, I can see sky getting gradually darker in bands ?!)

Hi Jenny, yea there might be an IR feel to it alright.

Pete, yes there is possibly banding there but I recon it is from the compression
to low res Jpeg about 85KB’s. the original is band free . . . I nearly sure!

As I mentioned before in another post I really like skies in my landscapes
and try to include as much as possible within reason.

In black and white especially I like dark skies with bright poppy clouds and
while this probably is a little too dark I think it creates a nice contrast to the ruin
and white cloud detail on the middle section.

I might try a less darkened sky this evening and post it up.

    Thanks Guys.

Wow, thats stunning Alan. I really like that IR look, I’ve tried to get my skies that black for ages and can never get it right. Did you use a polariser for the shot?

Anyway regardless of how you got it I think it works very well here. The contrasts between the Black sky, fluffy white clouds and the grey tones of the castle make this a class shot!!!

    Excellently done.

    Thanks Mick,

Yes indeed a polariser helps to get the blue sky darker.

when im processing to mono I always simulate a RED
filter which will darken the blue sky again obviously to
    B+W.

you have to watch for banding as well.

Beautiful shot. Love the crop too.

Although maybe a 3:1 crop, losing a wee bit off the sky would balance the composition that wee bit more.

Love the dark skies in this type of shot by the way.

    Thanks Brian, Dee & Ron,

Here is a slightly different process and crop.

As has been mentioned I processed this differently to lessen the contrast
in the sky and to have a lighter sky overall too and of course a 3:1 crop.

Not really happy about loosins the top of the sky and cloud detail though !
