Lakeside, Beara Peninsula
-
CianMcLiamParticipant
Just to prove it’s not just old stones that catch my attention, this is a gorgeous lakeside scene near Uragh (Cloonee Lake) on the Beara Peninsula in Co. Kerry. This was actually taken in the middle of the stunning autumn colours, late Oct. 2005. Camera was my old trusty D70, the only previous camera I’m a bit sentimental about.
Of course, old stones were always at the root of this trip! Here’s one of the most sublime stone circles in Ireland, and a stunning location at Uragh. The circle is a relatively small 5 stoner with a large, overbearing outlier which has the character of a parent eavesdropping on some playful children…
ssheridanMemberHi Cian,
Really like the first one. Fantastic colours and like the composition too. Did you do much processing? Did you use a filter for the sky? Much nicer sky then my Kylemore Abbey post.
CianMcLiamParticipantThanks Stephen, I think I used a smidgen of polariser on this, but as you can see it darkens the reflection in the water so if not done subtely you lose the effect. Other than that I simply burned the sky in a tiny bit near the top to balance it a bit better. It’s near impossible to fake a good reflection like this effectively in photoshop I think, or I haven’t seen many convincing attempts!
re. the Kylemore shot, I’d slap on a ND grad which might rescue some detail in the sky but given the composition that would have blackened the high terrain too, maybe try a little under-compensation? I had my D200 on -0.3 all the time if using aperture priority, the D300 is less predictable but this usually keeps me covered.
DeeboParticipantFirst one is superb! The colours are great and it looks like it was taken in Canada or somewhere more far flung than cloudy Ireland
I dont think the square crop suits it tho, i think more room to the right could help balance the shot and throw the pier off centreDee

Stephen.
mgstParticipantflynnyParticipantHarry LimeParticipantCanada was the first thing that came to mind for me too. Cracking array of colours
BMParticipantNo. 1 is one of my favorite posts this year. Great colours, surprisingly strong composition (with teh jetty in the centre and the shore of teh lake 1/2 way up the frame) and teh water so still.
richiehatchMemberStunning…! I love the first. Really strong colours and great composition.
Richie
kenhParticipantFirst shot is stunning Cian – belongs on a postcard (I mean that as a compliment!)
