Landscape Lens for Canon 7D.

I currently use the sigma 10 – 22mm 1:4-5.6 DC HSM with my Canon 7D, I was out this morning to catch the sunrise and I’m not that happy with the results. I’m thinking I might need a better lens to get the most out my 7D, I was thinking of a second hand canon 17 – 40 f4 L. Just wondering what are others on here are using for landscapes with the canon 7D.

    Thanks.
    Dave.

Hi Dave – my thoughts –

I have used the very same combination for the last year and a bit – I do like shooting into the sun – and am aware lens flare will sometimes be an issue and the distortion of parallels very often an issue.

Here are two examples which i was quite pleased with.

Each of these are photoshop blends of at least 3 bracketing shots. I don’t use grad’s.

I was also out at 7:45am this morning with my spanking new 5DMkii and 17-40 – and as there was so much blue in the sky – didn’t take the seascape i had planned….and went for oyster catchers instead with the 100-400 and 7D.

Banding of a plain ‘ol blue sky becomes more of an issue if there is not ample cloud cover to make the sky intresting and diffuse the sun a little.

The 17-40mm f/4L is a quality lens – however – it will not be as ‘wide’ as i think you like. Banding and lens flare will still arise under certain conditions.
If you are in the Wicklow area you are more than welcome to try out mine – or try maybe easier to get a loan of the more common 17-55 f/2.8 and see how the less-wide option suits. Conns will also let you try a lens.

An APS-c sensor and non L lens will always be inferior than a full frame and L

Unless your printing larger than 18″x12″ – maybe the combination you have will suffice?

Apologies if i am pointing out the obvious to you.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks Brendan, that’s really helpful. I normally don’t bracket myself so maybe I should give it a try again. I will keep an eye out for a good second hand lens. You have some lovely shots on your flickr account so maybe I will just have to try harder.

    Dave.
