Hi folks –
Working on a project here, and I’m wondering about how landscape photography has changed from, let’s say the 40s, to today. Ignoring the technical developments – what sort of aesthetic trends have emerged and how are we choosing and composing our subject matter differently now?
I think a lot of older landscape photography fell into what would now be considered a documentary category. Whether that’s just my perception giving my retrospective perspective, rather than solely an appreciation of the aesthetic of the image.
I think there is a trend towards colouration?desaturation of rustic images these days. I can only imagine that there must be a point in time where colour became affordable and readily available, opening up a whole new era in landscape photography (prob mid 60’s)
I also think advertising has had a big affect on the direction many photographic trends as these are the images that we are exposed to on a daily basis (Not saying that we all want our landscapes look like a kerrygold ad though).
This isn’t really an area of expertise for me so hopefully you get some more informed responses
