Late evening shots at the local pond
-
beefParticipant
Instead of shooting the birds on the pond, I decided to look for songbirds as the evening came to a close. C + C welcome…

Great tit (I think)
Blackbird0LoGillParticipantI think these are great :D – I have a little sun glare on my screen at the moment, so its kinda hard to see (grrr) – but they look nicely taken and sharp – I’d tinker with the composition a little more .. first is centre framed a bit too much for me ( but the colours and background is gorgeous)- and that blackbird ( yikes – is it a blackbird ?) is crying out for portrait ..
Nice job :)

0beefParticipantThanks for that Lorraine! I’ll try a few different crops and see what I can come up with. I thought it was a blackbird anyways?? Maybe one of the resident ornithologists here could clear this up for us!?
thanks again,
beef0joe_elwayParticipantVery nearly a great shot with the Black Bird. I find them hard to shoot … so jumpy and aware of what’s going on. It’s sharp and well exposed. Well done for that, esp. the latter. It’s a much better BB than I’ve managed up to now. There’s two problems.
The first is the composition as Lorraine pointed out. That’s easily rectified with a crop. Don’t think I’d go portrait. I’d probably go landscape with the bird in the left half and empty space on the right … crop before the branch on the right. I’d do some cloning to take care of what would remaing of the OOF branch on the left.
The second is the small out of focus twig/leaf in front of the bird. You could have tried to move to the right to clear it but givent that it looks like you were being watched, I doubt your subject would have hung around.
Great Tits are tough to expose for. You caught light in the eye and retained some detail in the white. The tough thing with this shot is the branch in the rear that runs by the subject. It’s really “strong” in the shot. A crop might also help to emphasise the bird.
0ExpresbroParticipantThird one is the best shot for me too Beef. But like Lorraine said..needs a portrait crop. I’d be fairly sure it’s a Blackbird myself…though I’m no ornithologist as anyone here will tell ya..
Anyway…it’s black..and it’s a bird…so…? hehe!!
0joe_elwayParticipantbeefParticipantCheers for all the tips guys! As I said, I’ll try some different crops later today (hopefully my boss will go home for himself!). I’ll also take on board your cloning suggestion Aidan, although I ‘m a bit heavy handed with the cloning tool to be honest! :) Practice is what I need I suppose.
While browsing through the raw files I came across another blackbird shot where I managed not to get stray branches in the way. This was just before the sun went down and the last of the decent light from the evening…
