First photo post!
Tell me what you think of this photo taken a couple of months back in Dublin. In the second I blurred the background in an attempt to make the subject more prominant against the cluttered background. Is it noticable it was edited in this way do you think? – does it improve it? – be nice  :)
plainoldmeMemberOkay, two things for me, the blurring doesnt help, and least not in my opinion anyway.
Secondly, and the most important, this image needs a rotation, to straighten the horizon and the street on both sides. You can so this in photoshop quite easily.Last time I checked the Spire wasnt built like the leaning tower of Piza
SteveReddinMemberHi Barry, I’d agree straightening it is the first step, anything slightly crooked does tend to catch the eye immediately, I think this is exaggarated by the flagpole which is already been held at a slight angle. I don’t think the original photography needs to be blurred to make the lead child stand out as he’s the only person present in the foreground.
There are a couple of spots to the left side of the Spire, I’d clone these out, they may have been birds or such, but are too small and lack detail to add to the picture.
There’s some lovely contrast in this photo, I particularly like the sunglasses when it obviously wasn’t sunny :)

I disagree. Apart from the off-vertical verticals, I think contrast is the next serious downfall with the image. Yes there is a good tonal range from white through to black, but the main topic is just stuck in the flat middle greys. B&W requires more than just converting it, it needs careful dodging and burning to bring out the image. Here the blown out sky really hurts the image and the other whites are really in the background (apart from the strap). As fare as B&W goes, I don’t think this has really pulled it off.
BarryParticipantThanks for all your comments. They are very helpful. I agree with them all too, and ill give it a go at implementing the suggestions.
