Leanne

Having been involved in the “yes” campaign for this section of PI, it would be strange if I didn’t post some of my own work here, so here goes.
My first “successful” art-nude shoot was earlier this year with Leanne at Lurgan Studios (that’s Ross’s great little studio). Prior to that I had done three other shoots, the first two of which I was not really happy with and the third I was moderately happy with as the results were more on the glamour side. I may post an image from that shot here at some stage.
So here, to start off with, are three images from that shoot with Leanne. I’m not entirely happy with the finishing I have on these and I wanted to rework them before posting them, but I’ve been so busy at the moment that I haven’t had a chance. There are some obvious flaws here which I need to fix before I get these printed up. Anyway, I’ll post them as they are for now. These may be pushing the forum limits to some extent and if they do, I’ll remove them.

Feel free to C&C if you have something constructive to add. I’m also curious to see if what I see as flaws others will see as well – and of course curious to see what have I missed.
MarkKeymasterWell I’ve zero experience or meaningful comments to make to be honest, due to that lack of knowledge to be honest,
but I love the lighting in the first two. Especially the first one, really highlights the soft curves.Last one I could take it or leave it personally. Keep ’em coming Thorsten :)
RobMemberOkay, I don’t know enough about what constitutes an effective art nude to give
a really worthwhile critique, but I do know what I like and don’t like, so I’ll give
it a go here Thorsten.Of these three the first is the strongest for me in every aspect, lighting, composition,
finishing, etc. Beautiful use of shadow and light, and there’s a wonderful seemingly
tactile texture to the skin in your coversion; if it was a print I think I’d have to reach
out and touch it to make sure, the detail is that good. Really nicely framed too with
the curve of the hip just touching the edge of the frame. I’m reminded of an exquisitely
finished musical instrument, or a wave…I’m not too gone on the second or third, but I don’t know enough to explain why,
except perhaps that the third is a little too symmetrical and ‘abrupt’ in the way the
legs have been cropped, nor does it have any of the sensuous curves of the first…Just my tuppence worth Thorsten, for what it’s worth…
Rob.
jb7ParticipantThanks Rob,
I was just going to say that…The first definitely-
I might be repeating myself slightly here,
but the backdrop to the second is too strong for me-
both its composition, and its perspective-If it were more geometrically ordered,
I think I might either like it more,
by not noticing it as much-I don’t think the third gets the most out of the model though-
though I’m not at all qualified to comment-well done, at any rate-

seanmcfotoMemberI’d better weigh in, seeing as it’ll justify the lambasting when I do actually post something.
1. Great. The best of the 3, but in its own league. I’m sure you’re well aware of the need to remove clothing lines though.
This is the kind of shot I like doing, accentuating curves and creating form.2. I like this, especially the shadowplay on the wall.
3. This does nothing for me, sorry. The pose is too hard, and although shot from the back, is very confrontational.
Also the straight on nature of the pose is too unforgiving on shape. Keeping the legs as is, for the cheeky bit of the pose,
combined with having Leanne twisting to look back, might’ve been better. Again I would’ve processed to keep her fully silhouetted for this
(as in the shot currently)Not Pete the blokeParticipantI have already commented privately on these, when they were hot off the press, which was a bonus at the time in return for use of the studio. Number 1 remains my favourite, which now seems to be by popular choice. Number 2 I also like, but cant make my mind up if a sharper shadow might have been better. Number 3 I dont like in comparison, but on its own my reaction might have been different.

AllinthemindParticipantHi Thor,
I’ve been waiting to respond to this topic to see if you’d put your worked shots up. As always, I’ll give my honest critique, I suck smoke, I don’t blow it :)
1: As I said with Sean’s shot, as an abstract bodyscape, I think there’s just too much here. A crop so that the belly-button is the point of interest would work better for me.
2: I like the way the shadows hit the frame corners, everything is pointing the right way, I think I would have had the model a little away from the wall to let light get behind her a bit and separate the body shadow from the wall shadow.
3: Cropped mid-bum to keep the legs is an interesting abstract, otherwise, I’m afraid this does nothing for me.
I’d like to see your worked shots to see wht you had in your mind for these.
All best
Si
ThorstenMemberThanks for the feedback everyone. Finally a forum where users are not afraid to speak their minds in case they hurt someones feelings. This is the kind of useful feedback that I need in order to improve my work. Some of it I agree with and some of it I will have to agree to differ with  But if we all agreed on everything all of the time, it would very quickly become very boring!
What I find interesting is that I find myself strongly agreeing with some of the comments I might have disagreed with when I first finished these images. Which begs the question – how long after taking an image should one wait before finishing an image, or is it always better to work on an image whilst still closely emotionally attached to it. But I guess that’s a whole different discussion.
As to my reworking of these images, I hadn’t planned anything radically different except to work on the clothing marks (which have already been pointed out above) and look at some subtle duo-toning. But I simply haven’t had a chance to work on these again yet and perhaps just as well, as I may now look some alternative crops as well.
seanmcfotoMemberA little thick skin never hurt.
Si, where would you recommend looking for images of this nature (ie from no. 1) that do click with you (no pun intended)AllinthemindParticipantHi Sean,
Have you googled “Bodyscapes” or “Bodyparts”? You have to hunt around for it, I just had a peruse. It’s more about using the lines of the body to make shapes as an abstract (for me). I just had a look at what I had (none)! This is about as close as I could find.
(not mine this one..)

You sure do have to hunt around for it! I know there are a few photographers over on PhotCamel that have done or do this type of work. Daniel Hice is one name that springs to mind. Also, I think perhaps a targeted search on photo.net might yield useful results.
seanmcfotoMemberThat last one is one of my favourite poses of this type…
Yeah, I love Dan’s stuff..LucParticipantMaybe contrarely to previous ones, I really like the third photo.
This silhouette has something powerful and with the pose, it makes me more think of a cinema poster.
First one is classical art nude and very well done.
