Hey guys new to this side of things I would be a landscaper normally I recently bought an elincrom 4d lite kit i am feeling my way through it…this is my wifes nephew fired one light from 20 degrees above and 45 to the left use the other flash head at full to blow the backdrop would like a third to back light the lad but alas perhaps santa will oblige. What I am asking is how can I improve this
PixelleMemberDunno about the flash but gosh what a model! And such a lovely expression too.
Alan RossiterParticipantLooks good to me John. If you want a tip on lighting I can only recommend http://www.strobist.com. Go through the Lighting 101 & 102 & you’ll be surprised what you’d pick up. If you already have, well, it shows above.
Alan.
whyulittleMemberFantastic.
The only thing a little bit weird about it is the square flash in his eyes.
LoGillParticipantSquare cathlights don’t bother me .. If this were a window you might get similar lights (though they may not be as bright) these don’t look unnatural
The biggest thing letting this down for me is the cropping off of the childs chin .. It can work with a really really tight crop into the face, but not here for me .. that… and a little boost in contrast for the skin so it doesn’t look so flat and grey against that white white background – but I’m not a pan of brighter backgrounds personally

Poulet et Lait…MemberIt’s the crop for me I’m afraid. Exposure seems fine just probably too heavy on final crop. Read up on Golden Mean etc…
And check out this…

snaphappyMemberthanks guys fro all the advice agree with most of it too and the catch lights did bother me too tried to round them but couldnt get it spot on so left them as for the crop I looked at several options and this one just looked best when he was centred it just looked llike a football on the screen must go back have another look though
Poulet et Lait…MemberAlso John, from the looks of this shot, it seems that you’re probably overposing the backdrop a little too much (probably a stop too bright) which is fine, but notice that the edges of the head are a little brighter, this is wrap around from the flash. If you’re looking for a VERY good walk through of how to do white backdrop high key shots…check this out…
AllinthemindParticipantThe background screams white and makes it ore difficult to see the ting on the skin, maybe go for a pale grey background and have more contrast?
