LEE big stopper trial:

Hi lads,
first trial with the lee big stopper.
comments and advice welcome.
thks.Gary McParlandParticipantHi Philippe
Out of the two i prefer the second. Nice composition and the light and detail is nice in the foreground. I think the first is maybe a bit dominated by the cliffs and i feel like i want to see more to the right. they are both nice images though.
When it comes to the Big stopper i have found that i get better results if the cloud is moody/dramatic and quick moving. With the second one it is maybe lacking the clouds to really give that streaky zoom effect but you can only shoot what your presented with on the day.
As for the halos you mentioned previously, it might be that light is getting in through the viewfinder so i always cover it with a cloth so light cant enter.
You could try going to ISO50 and F22 to get even longer exposures. Theres a little app for the iphone that calculates the exposures for you if you have one.

westcoastMemberThanks Gary for the advice, i’ll take everything on board.
i might have a second go at it some time next week, sounds like a good idea to revisit the two spots, see if i can improve on that.
i agree with you the composition in the first one is not great , i’ll have to try something different.
i think i would also need to try the big stopper closer to the water and shoreline rocks for more dramatic effects.
thanks.Any similar App. for Android?
snaphappyMemberTwo fine shots Phillipe. I use a B&W ten stop but it messes with the colour temp the Big Stopper seems like a better filter
westcoastMemberHi John,
Still not completely straight forward.
on both shots i had the sun at 90 degrees and got a lot of halos on most of my shots.
i am wondering… would it be because i am using a Lee big stopper in a Cokin Z-pro holder? they are the same size but may be the fitagainst the lens is not as good, letting light in through the sides?
thanks anyway.phillipMember2 very nice shots, i also use the B&W Nd110 new version which gives very little colour cast, but you problem you are experiencing is due to the holder, light is leaking in from the sides, i used to have a hitech filter and had the same problem, but what i did was get masking tap and rap around the filter when fitted, basically blocking any light from entering the sides of the filter, also a cloth works just as well.

westcoastMembersnaphappyMemberMy B&w 10 stop is a screw on so dont know bout light spillage. Philipe I do get a colour cast and I have new B&W I find on average I have to colour correct when using my 10x. I shootnormally at 5600k but when using the 10 stop it normally means I have to drop the color temp by about 700….
westcoastMemberSteveDParticipantI usually hold a dark strip of cloth around the Lee filter system to stop light leaking in on very sunny days. You also need to make sure your viewfinder is covered to prevent further light leakage.
alpacaParticipantTwo really great shots! for me the first one has a dramatic feel with the way the light falls on the rocks and the second has a really great composition!
