My sixteen-year-old neice Leighann (that sixteen going on thirty), under the very much mistaken impression that my favourite hat looks better on her than it does on me! The cheek! C& C appreciated…
Rob.
GwenParticipantI’m not sure if this is my horribly uncalibrated monitor on my laptop, but both of your images seem really, really flat.
LoGillParticipantLove the compoosition and the !attitude” :) .. but have to agree with Gwen – It looks pretty grey and flat to me too.. maybe a good old levels or curves adjustment – or even go back too the RAW and convert it using the LAB tutorial ??
Lorraine
RobMemberThanks for your comments folks, and yes I agree, this particular image is dreadfully flat. I made a complete mess of the conversion, but I thought I’d post it anyway to see if there were any other tips to be had. I’ll have another go from the original at a later stage. Gwen: I don’t think the second image is flat in the slightest, so perhaps it is your monitor, or perhaps I’m half blind. Not to worry. She was fairly happy with the result, and at 16, what else matters!
RobMember…another attempt to convert this image, this time using the lab tutorial. A little less flat but I’m still not sure if I’m getting anywhere. Advice anyone? Advice other than ‘chuck your camera in the bin’?
GwenParticipantI had a bit of a crack at it.
My main issue-and what I think is making it look flat in your conversion-is the loss of true black in the shadow detail on the left hand side of the image. There’s a shallower range of tones, which is what is making it look muddy. I had a look at the histogram after downloading, and it was skewed in favour of midtones, so I created a new adjustment layer and dealt with that, then erased the bits where there needed to be more detail.
LoGillParticipantHey Rob
The tones are MUCH better oin your new conversion – but the skin does look muddy in parts and its a little hot on the face and neck .. In Gwens the skin is much better … did you smoothen the skin Gwen or is it just the levels adjustment??
Looking MUCH better though and I like it even more :D
L
GwenParticipantAh yes-the levels conversion brings out a bit of uneven skin tone, so I ran Noise Ninja over it slightly to smooth it out.
paperdollParticipantThat LAB conversion thingy is genius isn’t it? I couldn’t make my mind about the first, but your edit worked well, and really lifted the original.
Thumbs up.AllinthemindParticipantRob, the second versi0on is fine from a tonality perspective. Her face looks a little flat because the light is front-on. If you can get your flash off camera and to the left, it would have put a slight shadow on the nearside of her face and made it look 3-D.
Composition and “attitude” look good :)

Cheers for the tip Si. At the moment I just have the built in flash, but should have a new flash arriving by post within the week. Should give me a bit of scope to try a few new things.
Rob.

She is only sixteen! So let’s make that a nice looking child who will one day become a beautiful woman.

I wonder if bare-shouldered shots of sultry sixteen-year-olds are appropriate? (Especially when they’re apparently snapped by a caveman).
