Lens age question

I am going to look at a second hand lens this evening – a Canon IS USM 17-85.

The chap tells me it is just over a year old, bought in Latvia, and he has no receipt to show it is a year old.

Have I any way of know whether it is a one year old lens or three/four/five year old lens? What should i look out for?

Hi Liam – this link may help.

I’d be less concerned with its age and more concerned with it’s condition. (lens scratch, mould etc)

I used to own that lens and sold it a few months ago for €250. It was 1 year old when i sold it.

Its a pretty ok lens – and much better than the 18-55 kit lens – but still not a L lens.

If i was you – i’d save a little more and get the 17-40mm. You could get this one for €450.

Is it for landscapes – or a geneal ‘walk about’ lens?

I think that some Canon lenses have the mmyy stamped on the rear mount.

thanks for the answers guys, hadn’t thought about the 17-40, but not sufficient zoom for me probably, I want it for portraits and as a walk around street lens.

IMO lens age doesn’t says anything. Check how smooth it is working, how diaphragm is working, focus at all mm. More important is – how often it is used.
