lens for Canon EOS 400D

Can I ask what would be a good lens to get for Canon EOS 400D. It came with 18-55 lens. I know nothing about any lens and SLR photography and am starting a course in Temple Bar on Wednesday night and hope to learn something. I have only used the camera for family shots and insects and flowers in garden. The size of it towards my Nikon Coolpix 7900 is a bit intimidating. You cant exactly stick it in your pocket.

There was a thread about Argos having an EF28-135 F/f.0-5.64 (none of that means anything to me) for ?289 and I checked it out today and reserved one which will be available next week. (dont think I am commited to buying it) There is no guarantee on price!. Would that be a good start or what would be recommended for someone like me.

    Any advice appreciated. Lily

If you’re just starting off then you’d probably be better sticking with the lens that you have until you get enough experience to know what you want from your next lens. Just my opinion anyways. Best of luck with the camera and the course.

Two things: Canon is spelt with just one N in the middle. I’m not being a pedantic arse here (well just a bit) but it looks a bit newbie-ish if you can’t even spell the name of the gear you’re using.

Anyway, well done on doing the course. It will broaden your knowledge a lot and help you get from taking snaps to taking great photos.

My recommendation for a lens is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 because it’s dead cheap, great for portraits and loads of other stuff; sharp, contrasty, and not having any zoom will really train your eye by making you walk about to frame a composition. Having f/1.8 means that you’ll have loads of control over depth of field (you’ll learn all about this on the course).

Good luck, and don’t take the pedantry too seriously.

    Hi Lily,

Both my teenage daughter and myself have the Canon 350D, which was superceded by the 400. We joined this forum last year and I was recommended the Sigma 17-70mm by other members, which I bought. Since this lens was constantly “missing” from my camera bag, I got the Canon EF28-135 F/f.0-5.64 from Argos on Christmas Eve. Both lenses are great value for money and are in constant use here! You won’t go wrong with the lens from Argos, especially at that price. When the learning curve is climbed you can invest in great lenses, especially, if you buy when in NYC or import from Hong Kong! I would recommend that you go to a good camera shop with your 400 and try out a number of lenses too. It would probably be wise to delay your purchase until you have finished the course.

    Bese of luck!

Hi Lily welcome to the forum. :)

I got the Canon 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM from Argos last month with no regrets.
Definitely a huge difference to the 18-55mm.
A good buy as a first lens considering its half the price than anywhere else at the moment.

Good luck on whatever you decide.

Thanks for all the replies about lenses. Have to have a think about which lens to get. Have removed offending N from Canon!

The course was good but a huge amount to take in.

hey lily a lot of people disregard the kit lens that comes with with the 350/400 but its not that bad a lens it very versetile and reasonable quality and if you can use the full range of function in your camera you can take some fantastic shots with this lens granted it lacks the sharpness and contrast of the likes of the L series lens. as mentioned above the one lens i would spend for is cannnnon 50ml 1.8 can be bought over the counter in ireland for a little over a 100 its tack sharp and the 1.8 is great in low light conditions. best of luck with your photography lily
