Lens kit bundles for Canon 400d

I’m about to buy a Canon 400d. I hear the 18-55 lens it comes with it not exactly the greatest, so I’m thinking of getting the body only and then buying a lens/lenses separately.

Here are some examples of what I found on ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Sigma-Lens-Accessory-Kit-fr-Canon-EOS-400D-350D-40D-30D_W0QQitemZ190157618806QQihZ009QQcategoryZ30070QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Tamron-2-Lens-Set-Canon-EOS-400D-350D-40D-30D-20D-10D_W0QQitemZ190156955623QQihZ009QQcategoryZ30070QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    Opinions please?

Come on guys, has anyone got any advice for me here?

Which are better – Tamron or Sigma?

The 18-55 that comes with it is cack.

I would go for the 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO – about ?399 in the shops in Dublin.

Hi Podge, thanks for the suggestions but that’s quite a bit out of my budget, I’m only a really a beginner so I don’t need to stretch to that just now, maybe later…
    Any cheaper alternatives?

The kit lens is sometimes over maligned. It’s by no means the greatest lens in the world by a stretch, but for the price it’s not at all bad. Your options to cover a decent range on a budget are pretty limited. You could look at the Sigma 18-50 (55?), which is supposedly a bit better than the Canon. You might get a deal on a kit with the EFs 17-85, but it’s probably going to be out of your budget.

If you are on a budget, consider getting the kit lens, plus say the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO and/or the Canon 50mm f1.8 which has a fair claim to the best value lens for any system.

This thread should really be under lenses.

We have discussed this before. For example:
    https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=1133
    https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=3466
    https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=3331

THere might be even more threads.

It’ll help to know what you are willing to spend.

Podge doesn’t like the kit lens because he has often compared it directly to my Sigma 17-70.
But as a starter lens and for what it’ll cost you compared to the body only options it’s not that bad.
    So JMcL is probably right.

About the ebay links you have posted.

28mm at the wide end is not much for a walkaround lens.
It depends of course on what you are going to do with it, but it’s quite long.

If you get the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6, and it is a great lens for the money, make sure you get the better APO version.

Don’t know nothing about the Tamrons.

    Thanks for your advice guys.

Yes I definitely want to get the 50mm – I think I will buy this immediately. But then I need another lens or two and I’m very confused as to what to get.

The annoying thing is that I get the impression you really do get totally what you pay for with lenses – and I’m just not prepared to shell out ?400-4600 on a lens right now.
That’s why this bundle looked like great value. However some might say I’m wasting my money and I should wait, save and get a better lens.

Perhaps instead of two lenses I should just buy one high quality one. I don’t really need telephoto. 200m would be more than enough, I could even manage with less. Any suggestions – Budget ?250?

Here are some I found on ebay – what do you think?

    Sigma 28-300
    Sigma 18-200
    Sigma 17-70
    Canon EF-S 17-85

I’d say decide between the 17-70 and 17-85.
I have the 17-70 and I am very happy with it.

However, the 18-200 is supposedly not a bad lens.
There is also a image stabilised (OS) version of it you might want to look at.

Thanks. I Read some good review on the Sigma 17-70 and here are some photos taken with it: http://www.flickr.com/groups/sigma1770/pool/

Seems to be a good all rounder and great value.

Any other suggestions? I need to buy something very soon

Go with the advice regarding the 17-70. You won’t be sorry with your purchase from what I’ve read.

    OK here is my dilema.

I can get the recommended Sigma 17-70 for around about ?300
    or
I can get the Sigma 28-70 and loads of extra stuff, including a Sigma 70-300, kit bag, tripod, filters and more, for actually less money.

So yes, I’m sure the 17-70 is probably a better less than the 28-70 but I’m sure you can understand how the 28-70 kit, is so much better value. So I looked at the flickr galleries for both: 28-70 gallery17-70 gallery and I can see the difference in some shots (although that may just be down to the photographer) but I don’t think it is worth it for me…

Here are some reviews of the 28-70.

    Comments?

If you’re into taking landscape photography the 28-70 will be of limited use and should be avoided.
That ebay bundle. The 70-300 doesn’t appear to be the APO one and if so don’t buy it as you’ll only be selling it.
The tripod is probably very light which is not a good thing. The filters might or might not be of good quality, thereby
decreasing the quality of any photographs taken with it.

End of the day you’ll get what you pay for. Value shouldn’t be seen as how many pieces of kit you get for x amount of money
but the quality of the kit you get for that money.

So reading from above contributions (which seem to contain all possible options), you should be looking at a combination of
    Sigma 17-70, Canon 50mm 1.8 and Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO.

The decision at the end of the day is yours. If you get poor quality lenses, you will be selling them later on as you will
    notice it in your photographs.

I second all that Mark said.

28mm will not make you a happy landscape photographer.

You will be better of spending those ?300 for the 17-70 (and buying more gear at a later stage)
than buying a useless kit and having to replace all of it sooner rather than later.

The 70-300 APO is a decent lens, the non-APO, I think, is to be avoided.

Most of the photos you’ll see on my flickr and on my website have been taken with the 17-70.

    My current lens kit is:Sigma 17-70, Canon 50mm 1.8 and Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO;
plus Sigma 10-20mm and, a very recent purchase, the Sigma 70-200 f2.8

You know as much as I wish you weren’t, I’m sure you are completely right. Thinking back any time I have gone and got the more expensive yet way better of two choices, I don’t often regret it. When I think about it I probably do not even need a telephoto lens – 70mm is prob enough in most instances. At least I will have one great lens instead of two mediocre ones. So I think I’ll buy the Sigma 18-70 and I will also buy the Canon 50mm later.

Now I just have to go find good deals on a case, filters, tripod etc!
