Lens Question

I am hunting around for the cheapest zoom lens I can find for my Pentax – I sam this item listed with BH in the US which seems very cheap!

Can anybody help me on this – am I missing something, or is this genuine? Can the quality be that poor (there is a similar Sigma unit for $1099)

    Tks a lot

Something like the Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DG APO might suit your requirements. They come in Pentax fit and are pretty well priced. A good few members here use them and reckon they are a pretty decent lens considering the price.

Ken..just had a quick look and if it’s the Sigma 100-300 F4 you are referring too..well a big part of the price difference will be because that is a constant f4 across the whole zoom range. In other words you will get f4 at the 300mm end compared to f5.8 on the Pentax. Not really comparing like with like.

If you look at the Sigma 70-300, this has a similar spec and is similarly priced to the Pentax.

I wouldn’t say there is anything “wrong” with the Pentax. It wont be the fastest lens in the world amd might not be the sharpest, but for the money it will probably deliver what you want.

Remember there will be customs and vat and also delivery on top of those prices, if you are getting it delivered.

I’m sure the lens will work just fine, but remember that you usually get what you pay for. Good glass costs more because of it’s superior build and quality. The lens you are looking are is also not very fast, with a maximum aperture of f/4.5. It is cheap, so it might be fun to just pick up and have a go with it. You never know, it could be your favorite lens for a while to come

BH are totally legit but they don’t ship outside the USA.

Sounds like they’ve changed their policies on international shipping recently then. I’ve ordered and received bits and pieces from them throughout the years and even when I checked their site a few weeks ago they were still quoting international shipping rates for shipping to Ireland. Too bad they’ve changed this now

Apologies… I went through the Checkout process earlier today and the Country was fixed as USA so I assumed the worst but now I can see there is a seperate link which must be clicked for International addresses. I have a tendancy to look for the drop-down list on the country and if I don’t see it I assume the worst.

I also buy from BH from time to time, and with the Dollar being so weak
against the Euro at the moment, even the import duty and VAT are going to
be a lot less painful. Big savings to be made, and a very reliable service…
To calculate your actual cost, add 6.7% duty to your total price, including the
    shipping costs,
and then add your 21% VAT. By the way, if you’re ever
buying a camera body, then it’s exempt from duty, but you still pay VAT.

    Rob.
