Lense for sports photography?

Hello everyone, I’m currently thinking of buying a new lense for my Nikon D80 and I would really like to purchase one that would help me improve my sports photography, possibly one with a good zoom as I enjoy taking photographs of GAA, soccer etc, I currently only have my kit lense which is 18-135mm. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Go raibh mile maith agaibh.

They are very helpful their.Tell them ur looking for a fast Zoom lens for sports photography and they will assist u in any way they can.
You will pay for a high quality lens in this area so your budget will very much determine what you get.
When u get the model, shop around to get the best price.
I would even reccomend buying it from best price cameras in the States. They simply cannot be beaten on price.

I’ve started using my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L, and while it’s fast enough, it just doesn’t have the reach I’m looking for. I also have a 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS L, but it’s not really fast enough for low light photography (sports under floodlights).
If you’re shooting in good light (daytime) then you may get away with a slower lens (f/4 or greater).

I use the D80 as well…and have used the 18-135mm for some football shots..and it it does lack reach for sure.
If you’re on a limited budget, the Sigma 70-300 DG APO lens is cheap and a decent lens. Yes it is a bit slow..ie. it wont work brilliantly in low light…but if you’re shooting outdoors in bright weather it will work fine.
It’s not ideal of course..but you are going to have to pay big money ( ?1000+) for a good fast sports lens…you can pick up the Sigma for under ?200. I’ve used it to shoot a Motocross event recently and got some fairly decent shots.
It’s a cheap introduction to a longer lens….and is a pretty good alrounder.

I wouldn’t be very experianced or anything in this area, but i do own a D80 and if you’re looking for a lens and on a buget i would recommend the Sigma 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 DG .. i find it’s a good all round lens and very cheap.. i picked mine up at bermingham cameras in dublin for about ?320 .. thou not sure if they still sell them
