    Hi Angela,

I’m no expert on St Tropez but I would guess #1.

I would presume that by posting the 2 images above you have a
desire to tkae photographs that stand out from the crowd.
I might be a little harsh but there are many thousands of images
similar to the 2 above taken every day.

The scene in #1 probably has the most potential as there is loads of activity going
on but I’m not sure what you are trying to show or say to us.

You could have got in a lot closer and isolated some interesting activity that
    would hold a viewers attention.
For example, what is that lady with the hat up to?

Or you could have backed off a bit and maybe given us a view of the whole
area and all the goings on.

#2 is a photograph of a boat with the mast cut off.
I think you needed to home in on some activity or interesting view
that would grab and hold a viewers attention.
Maybe show what was going on at the back of the boat?

Often a small change in viewpoint, framing or choice of subject can improve
an image no end but I think maybe you need to decide what you are trying
to show or say and then take whatever steps are needed to do it.

    Keep shooting and posting.

sorry john, that will teach me not to try to be clever.

    both are st tropez

pic one was depicting the painters, relaxed, enjoying life in a very simple way,

compared with pic two (the name of the boat is “our toy”)

the artists were very nice friendly people chatting away to people and happy to chat about their work (the lady in the hat was one of the artists)
the crew were waiting for the owners to land to board and were so far up themselves, and quite rude to people.

Hi Angela. Without the explanation of why you took these shots, I would not have made the connection. I’d agree with john in so far as getting in closer or different angles etc to get your point across (without words). This is basically what documentary photography is all about. You made a good attempt. I think if you relax and think about what you are trying to portray for a while before you take the shot you can get some great shots. I’ve never been to St. Tropez, and certainly have no desire to be with the rich and famous. give me normal people living in the “real world” anyday. Nice work, keep it up.

    Hi Angela,

I should have copped it was a trick question.

You were on the right track chatting to the artists.
Next time make use of your communication skills by getting in close
and showing us what they were doing.

I hope I didn’t sound too preachy earlier.
I’ve a lot to learn myself and I too have taken loads of images that don’t know
what they’re supposed to be saying.

    Cheers.

not at all john, dont worry about it. the whole point of posting here is to learn, and i wont do that if i cant take advice from others. as you said the whole point of documentry is to tell a story without the words and i didnt do that. i have loads to learn, all i know at the min is that i enjoy taking photos, do only some very basic editing with them as i dont have ps, but hopefully some day will manage to take one that will have someone here say wow!!!

Hi Angela. We are all learning here(or at least we should be or else we are just wasting time). Wow photos don’t happen too often, but when they do , they can literally change our world. The composition, exposure, lighting etc may not be perfect or even good for that matter, but the subject matter and the strength of the message can make all the difference between a boring unexciting image and a mindblowing one. Some of the best documentary photographs have a disturbing content which give them impact, others show human kindness towards someone less fortunate. Whatever the content, the photographers aim is to get a message across in the best way possible. To me personally, the photo taken by Nick Ut in Trang Bang Vietnam was possibly one of the greatest documentary photographs of our time.( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:TrangBang.jpg )even though it is not a great photo technically, it had a massive impact at the time. I hope my comments are of some help and hopefully sometime soon you will get the wow photo/photos that you want. Remember we have to crawl before we can walk. Enjoy what you are doing and keep snapping.

Well done Angela and miki g.

It’s satisfying to see advice/opinion given and accepted
    in a good spirit.

It makes the effort made to form an opinion and comment
    on images very worthwhile.

    :D :D :D :D

    Thanks.

miki, ye, its one of those pictures that no matter who you are, what your opinions are, what politics you hold, you cant help but get a message from.

dont worry, dont expect to get the wow any time soon, lol, but who knows some day, for now am just happy to enjoy it and hopefully learn.

john, i think one of the problems with email, blogs etc, is that sometimes its not easy to get the intention of the message across. anyone here who cant take constructive critizism probably shouldnt be here or should mark their photos as no critics please, lol. its easy i guess if you are unsure of yourself to take it personally, but dont worry, im a little bit thick skinned, and only cry if i really really have to.

the photos might not have great but at least they provided a bit of dialogue (this must be the most responses to a photo i’ve posted yet, lol

    thanks guys
