Normally I don’t particularly like photos of statues, because frankly it’s hard to get anything interesting out of them. But these statues along the north side of the Liffey (near the IFSC) are just haunting at night.
They certainly are haunting Antifuse. I wouldn’t be a huge fan of statuary photography either, but there is something to be said for these. Personally, I think it might be better to go back on a really rotten grey day with lousy light and convert your final images to monochrome. The impact of these is somewhat lost; the carvings look as though they’re meant to evoke memories of cold and hunger and famine, the faces grotesque, tortured and forlorn, yet the light in which these are captured has a warmth that contrasts too greatly with what is being portrayed.
I could of course be talking through my fedora, but I just thought I’d offer my tuppence worth…
Interesting shots antifuse – definitely tough to get decent shots of statues but i think the lighting/shadows and tones are great in these.
I would be inclined to get rid of the buildings in the background, they really take away from the mood of the shots. Very nice composition in 3 and 4.
Cheers for the responses, folks… Rob – I have already planned to revisit them… I want to try some other angles both during the day and at night. And Ali, I totally agree with you about the buildings. I couldn’t do any building erasure though, due to the fact that I don’t have access to any useful imaging software here at work :)
