Light meter

nfl-fanParticipant
I need to get myself a light meter… I didn’t realise you can get the oldies so cheap. There’s one on my OM10 but it would be tricky to decipher the actual shutter speed as the needle sorta floats between numbers.
Can anyone recommend anything… cheap, but not cheap enough to perform poorly?
GizzoParticipantnfl-fanParticipantYa.. just been Googling and these seem popular. Any particular model?
Thanks!
GizzoParticipantmmmm I would like a spot-meter, but they are quite expensive… so let’s stick with a 30deg one….
Gossen Lunasix, Sixtar or something like that…. quite cheap and reliable.
or even the wee one that Expresbro got… which is the same that mr.Donnelly has…nfl-fanParticipantGizzoParticipantactually I have a Gossen Sixtar. If you want to have a look before buying it, give me a shout ;)
nfl-fanParticipantThanks Gizzo… I just spotted a Gossen Digisix which sits in & around my budget… not too cheap, not too expensive… should do the job?

GizzoParticipantmmm if you want something digital, with numbers instead of a needle, try searching on ebay for this fella…
http://www.sekonic.com/products/Sekonic%20L-308S%20FLASHMATE.aspsome ‘usual suspects’ have it and they’re happy with it…
edit: it’s little bit more expensive, but it’s definitely more sophisticated as far as I can see…nfl-fanParticipantCheers.
Would I be correct to assume that readings are the same for both digital and film… I could have swore I read somewhere that there can be differences? Excuse my ignorance here… I could be talking a load of codswallop.
ExpresbroParticipantThat Sekonic L308 is the one I’ll probably end up buying Gigi. Can get it from Hong Kong Phooey for about €120 delivered.
Anybody know what I’d miss on that compared to the more expensive Sekonic models? I’d be using it with my D-Lite flash system as well as outside.

it would be indeed.
the exposure it’s one.
given a ISO value, there’s only one combination of f-stop and shutter speed that will give the 18% grey. no matter the support used.
I mean, one combination _plus_ the equivalent that we can work out using the reciprocal values (not sure if this makes sense in english, actually).the support on which we take the picture has a different range between highlights and shadows…normally color slides and digital sensors have the smallest, that’s why you use GND filters or double exposures.
but that has very little to do with exposure.

RRob, my advice would be, use the Sixtino you got.
the money you save, use it for the 105vr macro.in my opinion you won’t have different results using the old wee meter compared with the 308….. or definitely not worth investing that much money..
expecially because I assume you will use it to take b/w pictures, and you can play around with the film…..I hope this sounds friendly enough :) I don’t want to interfere too much with your decisions ;)
ExpresbroParticipantSuper friendly as always Gigi ;-)
I guess I’m jumping the gun and assuming that the little cheapie Sixon could not possibly compare wth the new fandangled Digital things.
I’ll just wait and see how I get on with it first.
Wish that the extra 110 euro would pay for the the difference for the 105mm VR , but sadly I don’t think so.. :-)
Ah maybe some nice money bunny will come visit me.
nfl-fanParticipantCheers Gizzler, I’ll probably roll with the L308 from the UK (I’ve quit the HK scene, too much hassle). Appreciated.
Obviously I could just use any of my current digital or film cameras for a reading in the meantime then?
ExpresbroParticipantActually..here’s probably the dumb question of the week…
But if, like John, I want to use my D300 to meter for say my Bronica, does focal length have any bearing on matters, assuming that the Aperture, shutter speed and ISO are the same?
