Lighting Streaks

  • Hi Guys
I looking for some advise on creating some funky effects with flash mostly for niteclub work, this is a whole new area to me and theres’s not much content out there on this specific area.
Basically i want to create lighting streaks within the portrait and keep the subject sharp whilst the background is completly thrown with the club ambient light. Im using a Canon 5d with 580 Ex and from what i gather its to do with the rear sync or 2nd Curtain,i wonder is this the way to go while working within slow speeds that the flash will go off at the end of duration of the shutter. Have looked at the manual and its explains flash but not what setting or mode you need to have the camera in. Any advise would be grateful.
    Thanks
    Ben

    Hi Ben.
I’m not experienced in this type of thing, but anything moving in the scene will blur until the end of the exposure when the flash will fire. I think the technique you are looking for is known as light graffitti or painting with light Use the manual settings for your exposures on the camera.

    Thanks Miki
Yeah i was thinkin that but i’d say its mostly people/portrait stuff so anything less than 30/40th of a sec with Is lens at max Iso is my limitations, here’s a guy who’s work ive admired for a while and he seems to get that look down to a tee http://www.sharpshock.com

    Thanks for the heads up
    Ben
