    Two questions.

    Are you using Lightroom 2?
If so are you satisfied with the speed it runs at?

I was getting ready to change from 1.4 to 2.0. However on reading this thread on Adobe’s forum

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b604cf

I am beginning to think I should put it off for a while.
Just interested in a local Ireland comment

The benefit of hindsight is a wonderful thing, but let something like this be a valuable lesson, which is that unless you’re prepared to put up with a certain amount of hassle, then it’s unwise to be an early adopter, particularly when it comes to significant upgrades. Look back at some of the major new releases over the past number of years and they have all been afflicted by gremlins which real users had to experience before something was done about them. The Canon EOS 1D Mk III and Windows Vista are just two such examples. A prudent approach in IT circles has always been never to jump on the upgrade bandwagon but take a “wait and see” approach.

Lightroom is clearly trying to be a lot of things to a lot of users and it’s inevitable that there will be a performance hit along the way. I can’t speak on it with any great authority as I’ve only just downloaded the trial version to see what all the fuss was about. For the time being at least I will continue to use my long-standing RAW converters, which are Capture One 4 and Digital Photo Professional, both of which run very fast and perform their core functions (raw conversion) exceedingly well.

I’m sure there will be a Lightroom 2.0.1 in the not too distant future that will address the issue, so hang in there and stick with it.

I have been using it for more than a week, every day on an
old P4 machine and it runs fine.

Some advice on that. The Camera raw cache by default on Lightroom 2 is quite low. If you increase this, then you will notice a performance improvement.

This is a relatively new feature, but seems to have more effect on Lightroom 2 than it did on Lightroom 1.3/1.4.1. Lightroom 1.3 was the first to introduce the raw cache.

I installed the trial Lightroom 2 on a test PC and found it dog slow (Duo core 2.4ghz, 2GB ram). I had ample disk space, so increased the raw cache from 1Gb to 10Gb and then the performance of Lightroom 2 was even better than Lightroom 1.4.1

    Worth checking out and testing.

Increase the cache size, and purge the directory. Let it build it’s cache again, and I hope you will see a much better performance, as I did.

Big advantage of Lightroom 2 is the fact that on 64-bit computers running Vista-64 or XP-64, it runs in native 64 bit mode and totally bypasses the WOW64 emulator and is lightning fast!

Most new PC’s are actually 64-bit machines, but usually only have Vista 32-bit installed. 64-bit windows can access more memory, typically more than 4GB of RAM, (up to 128GB for Vista 64-bit Ultimate), and this can speed up other programs as well.

Photoshop CS3 is a dream to use on a 4GB machine, and CS4 due out next month will also run in NATIVE 64-bit mode.
