Lions Shot. Help needed with the colour.

John DunneParticipantjoolsveerParticipant
I had a quick go at it but I don’t know if it’s an improvement or not.
DaveSteveDParticipantLovely shot John, good job.
Here is my edit, if you want further details of the process let me know:
John DunneParticipantThank you both for such quick and excellent responses. I cant choose which is the better one. Maybe others might add their opinion.
GilesKSParticipantI prefer the colour of the original. The composition and exposure of it is good, the problem is that it is somewhat soft. joelsveer’s edit has been over-sharpened something awful, and the colours look wrong in SteveD’s. Oversaturated. joelsveer also seems to have blurred the background somewhat, which is strange because if anything it needs more texture, not less. I think the original would have benefitted from a slightly smaller aperture in that respect. Maybe some selective sharpening on the lions would be useful, but not too much.
ValentiaMemberI must say I like the original too. Just a touch of USM is all it needs I think.
gerardkParticipantThats odd – I just tried downloading it twice and both times got these wierd light blue lines across the pic horizontally (going through the upright lions nose).
Id vote for the original too. I actually like the 70’s type daktari look of it (dont mean that in a bad way). I like the scars on their faces – it really makes it a more powerful shot. If anything I would probably do a very subtle levels adjustment.

Not oversaturated at all!! I think the contrasty look makes the image jump off the page. If you were producing a safari brochure….which image would you want? I know I would chosse the richer colours and contrasty image!

This is one of my favourite wildlife shots. However I’ve never been happy with the colour on it. It looks like a 1970’s kodak moment to me. Id love somebody to tweek it for me. Taken in Kenya, 2005.
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO WORK ON IT. I’ve seen some excellent repair jobs done here. Its a lovely image and you’re right to work it to perfection.
You saw the scene so you really know how this should look but heres how I like it, just slightly different to yours.
FintanParticipantOh while I’m at it, a while ago I made a watercolour out of it to print on canvas for you.
John DunneParticipantThank you all so very much for your help.
Each edit was exceptional and each one perfect in their own right.
Not just because I know Fintan , and not just becuase I think he is God with a camera. I think his first version is the most realistic. (like the watercolor too)Maybe it is because he has benefited form seeing the print.
Thats not to take from any of the others either which i think are excellent too and I really really apreciate the input.
This website is truly outstanding. Where else could I post a picture after lunch and have it worked on so many times by night.
John DunneParticipantJust one other point. Joolsveer got the sky colour bang on. The sky in Kenya is remarkably lilac. Most peculiar. So well done joosveer on such a correct interpretaition.
Thanks again everyone
AliParticipantjoe_elwayParticipantHere’s what I did in PS CS:
levels – clipped lift portion of histo
autocolour
autocontrast
slightest S shape possible in curves
Filter – sharepn – USM: 70/0.8/0
Noise Ninja (slight amount of noise reduction)NIce shot by the way. Like how the male appear dominant/protective over the two (apparently) females, as if they were adults already. The male is already starting to become an impressive looking amimal.
