This photo was taken in Lismore on March 15th. Any C & C welcome please? I hope that I have this posted in the correct section.

Nice shot – good detail and colours – the type of shot you can spend a long time viewing.

One comment on the composition, it would have looked a bit better if you didn’t chop the tops of the trees :)

Thanks Ken – I know what you mean about the trees. I also think that the monument stone at the bottom right hand side – takes a little from the picture. I will try to compose this shot again from another angle when I get the chance.

I like the textures in this shot. Agree about the trees, it is a bit askew also imo (horizon??) and the people don’t really help your cause.
I’d like to see this printed on canvas.

    All the best

Sean – I might try to do a job on the trees in PS – cloning etc. to see if I can improve on this a bit.
I am doing a photography course at present and this shot was taken during a field trip last Sunday when I wandered away from the group. I am very much a beginner. I like having people in the picture and the area is actually called ‘The People’s Park’. Can you make any suggestions on how I could improve on the horizon? The photo is very busy so I am not very clear on this. I am thinking of going back to the same location to capture a similar shot and will gladly take any suggestions on board.

Thanks a million for your help

    Hi Alice

If you don’t get horizon right when shooting you can rotate the image in photoshop using a free transform. I’m still figuring it out myself. You do have to crop the corners of your image to square it again when you do this. In your image the buildings are all leaning to the right. This is obviously more noticeable with straight lines than trees and curved, park walls.
There is nothing about the people to tell me (I’ve probably only driven through lismore once, at high speed- unless it has a bypass) that this is called the peoples park, or that you are including the people for any reason, other than they are there. The person with the red jacket and shopping bags in particular jars with the serenity of this image
Does the monument stone say “peoples Park”? if so you could feature it more rather than cutting it out. Just missed Paddies day it might have been jammers with peoples.
finally I think it is a bit overexposed.

    Hope this helps?

Best of luck with the course

Thanks again Sean. I did’nt realise that the buildings were leaning to the right until you pointed this out. I have straightened this now. I have removed a few of the people, altered the exposure slightly, wrote my name and date on the monument stone. Unfortunately, I tried to do something about the trees but it did’nt work out as the cloning was too messy. As I said previously, I will try to take a shot of this scene again, with the same settings and in similar lighting, whenever I get the time.

How about posting the altered image in the original thread so that we can have a look?

Hi Sean – I am posting the altered photo in this section so that you can compare it with the original. I dont know if you are aware of picasa editing software that comes free (google software). I do most of my messing around in CS3 or CS4 but I downloaded picasa recently and I find it really good. It sorts out your files and folders and there is a great section for straighten buildings etc in photos. When you open this section, a grid will come up on the screen to help you align the buildings etc. I did not use this for my photo as I had already used the transform tool in photoshop but will use it going forward.
    Thanks,

    Hi Alice,

Looks much better I think. Just using the edge of computer screen as a guide it could probably come around a bit more. Great job getting rid of the people in the background.

    All the best

Thanks again for your help Sean. I may get this photo put on a large size canvas at some stage as I like it. I will try to straighten buildings a bit more with picasa first.

I think it’s the fountain rather than the buildings thats giving the photo that lopsided feel. Lovely colours in this.

Once you have fountain straightened then you should be good to go!!

Thanks Ballyman. I will try to straighten the fountain a little but I will have to be careful not to tilt the buildings too much to the left. Even though PS is magic I dont suppose there is any other way around this.

Daly – is this photo a composite of 3 or + exposures ?

Daithi – I used aeb for this shot, using 3 different exposures. This is new to me but I think that I am hooked on it as it gives me lovely colour ranges – close to what the human eye sees without being OTT. I want to take this shot again using the multiple exposures but will make changes to the composition, using the pointers that the lads above were good enough to give to me.
