Long exposure and fog

There was a thick fog here last night, so I headed out with the intention of trying a few things in those conditions (it’s Ballyscanlon lake, just outside Tramore). I’d shot this one with the intention of converting it to mono, but preferred the muted colour version, with coolish white balance. It’s a 15 second exposure to smooth out the lake surface (oddly for a foggy night it was quite windy), with a bit of fill in flash to pick out the branches. Unfortunately the wind caused a wee bit of movement in the smaller branches though it mightn’t be obvious at this resolution

    John –
That’s a very striking image – I like it a lot. I’m not sure on the angle though – I’d like either to be higher (so there’s better seperation between the shore and the treetops), or lower (so they intersect the shore).

    The mood is fantastic though.

    Cheers,

    Thanks folks!

Peter, I was trying to contain the branches within the frame of the lake – I had another slightly closer shot where they break the horizon, but I didn’t feel it worked as well. I hadn’t thought about a higher viewpoint (though not sure it’d have been possible – I was up to my knees in the lake as it was :) )

Really like this, nice and simple but very striking. A good one to print maybe?

Nice dreamy feel to this photo, I wonder what it would look like if you brought out the rocks just under the surface a bit more? Could add or not eh?! Nice photo.

If anything, the more I look at it I’d be tempted to tone them down, as I find them a wee bit distracting.

John, I agree-I’d tone them down rather than trying to bring them out.

A lovely creation, a great mood captured and a deservedly happy photographer no doubt.

A very striking image John. I like your viewpoint of the branches
framed within the confines of the lake surface. Lovely shot. I reckon
it might even work with a crop from the bottom to leave it letterbox format…

great minimal image – would agree with some other comments about toning down the rocks as they are a little distracting
