An example of what I’ve been up to lately .. figuring my way around the studio has kept me occupied !
C& C is very much appreciated

nfl-fanParticipantNot much of a portrait person myself, although it is one area I plan to gain some experience in someday.. so I can only comment on what common sense tells me here… as opposed to any real knowledge in this area.
I like the composition but I do wonder is all the black space on the left hand side necessary? I’d be inclined to trim a little off this.. but not too much.
The grey patch in the top right corner is a little distracting.
I find the catch lights in the eyes a bit on the large side… almost completley covering the pupil.
The skin tones on the model’s neck are a little drained and lifeless… maybe more a make-up issue than photography… feel free to ignore here as I’m just calling it as I see it… no real experience here. The hair looks great until you reach the left hand side… where it seems to totally disappear… might have been nice to have some presence here. Plus.. very dark eyebrows considering the colour of her hair.
Lots of pickiness there.. feel free to tell me to feck off as I’ve never set foot inside a studio before. Still though… a really well exposed image I have to say and certainly top quality in a lot of regards.

Broadford1ParticipantI am no expert – but I know what I like
I think it is a lovely shot. Love the simplicity of it.
Very strikingSodafarlMemberThere is an F’in NFL  I never found a thing wrong with this thought you had got the skin tones just right the pose is great and then John has me look at it agin and unfortunately he does seem right about the neck, maybe I hadn’t got past the face. The eyes are stunning could be John’s catch lights but I think it helps if this is what it is. Not that I know anything about portraits but I really like it and your break with the lights has certainly paid off, just look out for the electric bill
Great first post for the second time (you know what I mean).

jessthespringerParticipantIs it because the neck seem a little pale? I really like the tones in the skin, very natural I think… Heaps better than the St Tropez, 3 coats of burnt orange! I really like the space on the left but I guess the grey bit in the top right corner is a little distracting but I also know how hard it can be to get this kind of set up just right (is this a self portrait?)
I think it’s great!
Sinead.
AllinthemindParticipantNicely done Lo,
Great expression!
Soft tones (the colour of this is to suit you really).
You have Kayt’s good side and the shadow is spot on.
Top right is a little odd, is that a hat or the background?
Maybe a gentle hairlight would have looked good.
Framing, maybe have her slightly lower in the frame so her gaze hits the entering corner.Si
LoGillParticipantAll Comments (especially common sense ones ) are welcome :)

The skin tones on the model’s neck are a little drained and lifeless…Compsitionally I like what Simon suggested – so I may review this.. I personally like the negative space – but I agree its very black and a bit disconcerting .. sometimes I feel it fits the mood – othertimes I’m not so sure !
The grey patch is a hat – which is holding the hair back on the other side of her face – but there isn’t enough of it there to determine what it is and it leaves people wondering .. a framing correction might address this .. Thanks for the comments – its constructuve and helpful ;) followed your flickr link … shiver
Broadford1 – thanks a mill – glad you like it !

The skin tones – I love them – its not changing 8) the light falling on her face has cast shadow on the neck – this is normal fall off – so I’m not so concerned about it – the look overall in tones is what I wanted
The catchlights are due to her looking driecly to the light – It has been mentioned before – but I’ve had the same effect looking diectly into a window light – so its perfectly natural – I personally love the liquid effect this has BTW the “F in NFL” had me puzzled for a while –
Sinead – thanks a mill – this is so not a self portrait – I haven’t done one of those for ages, years now and i’m sure its still lurking around the archives here somewhere lol – the model is Kayt who is a great model (the best I have ever worked with) and she is quite fair in skin tone – but I did a little more here to enhance the palour of her skin in contrast to her eyes and hair – Oh – and I absolutley HATE fake tan aswell ;)
Si – expression – well you know how easy she is to work with ;) I’ll take a look at your framing suggestion .. I think you may be right in terms of solving the hat problem – either that or i’ll darken it down. I had a hairlight set up here initially – but she moves so well and so fast in and out of the range of it – so in the end I gave up stopping her and let her run fluid in terms of movement .. and worked with just the softbox for this set up
Thanks a mill everyone for taking the time – don’t be shy about critique – I asked for it ;)

AllinthemindParticipantThat’s the one problem with Kayt, she does keep moving when you want to refine a pose. “Keep still woman”, normally works, hehe
SiPunk RockMemberI like the picture as it is, absolutely perfect imo, infact I would describe it as stunning, the model is very beautiful too.
I think her looking towards the Black space adds to the picture.
Also about the models neck, I find it perfectly fine as as everybody knows females put make up on the face and not their necks.;)
If you start having everything the one tone it might as well be a glossy magazine airbrushed type fakeness which too often prevails these days.LoGillParticipantPixelleMember.. very dark eyebrows considering the colour of her hair.
There’s a lot of it about! :)
Lovely photograph of a lovely model. The satin part of her dress keeps distracting me though, it’s not smooth enough, too ruched, [ is that a word? ]
RobMemberLike this one a lot Lorraine, very very good indeed…
I don’t find any issue at all with the hat; coupled with the fade
to black of the left side it adds a little more depth and dimension
to the image overall. Fantastic skin tones too, very pleasing.I would agree to some extent with John in regard to the catchlights
being just a little large though, or at least a little large for my personal
taste. I might prefer if she hadn’t been looking directly to the light and
the catchlights were less central.Terrific image…
Rob.
Thomas GeeMemberLove this shot ,I am just starting doing portraits so I would not dare pick any faults.
It s nice to see a shot thats not oversaturated, well focused and exposed.Regards
ThomasLoGillParticipantthanks a mill all – a few people on other sites have found the catchlights disconcerting .. but I’m sort of fascinated by it for the moment – It may wear off :)
Peter – glad you like it :)
