Wasnt sure which section to put this in, but it will be used for photography purposes..
Im looking for a decent GPS for my car. Im happy to do some research i just need to be pointed in the right direction.
If any one has any recommendations that would be great. I will only be using it for Ireland.
I dont need top of the range, and the cheaper the better :)Cheers
ConalPodgeMemberLidl has them every so often.
Personally I have a Sony Nav-U that I bought for about €250. I had a Garmin that just stopped working one day and they won’t fix it even though it was under guarantee. The Sony one has better maps anyway.
stcstcMemberthere are only two real lots of maps
navteq and errr cant remember the other
all the manufacturers use one or other, apart from the odd minor example
you want to go with one of the big brands
garmin, tom tom etc
i have had a garmin, and now have a tom tom. the tom tom is a bluetooth car kit etc too
but what is it you need it for, most of the car ones are not that accurate, if you want something more accurate you should look at one of the ones the walkers use.
when i say not that accurate, i mean they will take you to an address. but if you trying to say find a relic in a field they aint much good.
RaVMember^in that case accuracy isnt important, at least in the way youve put it.
Madra RuaParticipantI.e. Garmin NUVI 250 Europe GPS at Komplett.ie : 130 Euros

rc53MemberWe have a Tom-tom for the car, it works well enough.
But there is a fearsome female in it, who will boss you around.
And she sometimes has strange ideas of the best routes to take –
she is quite keen on peculiar detours.
But to find places you don’t know, or if you are lost, she’s quite
useful.
It does bluetooth for the mobile, which is handy.RaVMembercheers Madra, the Garmin NUVI 250 looks perfect for what i need, its very nicely priced too.
PodgeMemberIf my experience of Garmin is anything to go by you will have problems if it stops working. It looks like the build quality of the cheaper Garmins is not up to much as I’ve seen others complain about it online (search Google).
This is a much better buy in my opinion (its slightly cheaper) – http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/1745231/art/tomtom/one-classic-gps-for-europ.html
and it has a 2 year warranty (not 1 year like Garmin).
MallachtParticipantI had a totally different experience of Garmin I have the ~Nuvi 760 and it gave up the ghost, my fault I think overloaded it with routes for USA and couldn’t delete them anyway to cut a long story short I returned it to Garmin in England and within 2 weeks had a new Nuvi 760 boxed plus all the bits and bobs in the post I was delighted with the service and with Garmin in general I also have experience of Tom Tom and prefer Garmin
PodgeMemberMy Garmin Nuvi 300 died after 11 months. The nearest office is in the UK and they point blank refused to accept it under warranty even though the warranty had not run out (I have the original receipt as well). When I escalated my complaint to to the support guy’s boss they said they would fix it for £80 Sterling (provided it was not water damaged or otherwise my fault) and I would have had to pay the return postage to the UK. I had considered taking them to the small claims court but decided it wasn’t worth the bother.
If you search Google you will see lots of people complaining about their Garmin GPS failing after a while. My point is that the build quality does not seem to be up to much in recent years and this is especially true of the cheaper car units.
MallachtParticipantWow that was a bummer no doubt Sorry to hear of your very bad experience with them thats the pits Just better keep my fingers crossed then but as I say I was very impressed with the way they treated me as the damage was my own doing (didn’t admit to that of course).
RaVMemberJust passed my driving test today, so think ill be getting the Garmin NUVI 250 for 106euro from Komplett this weekend. :)
