Mac or PC

I always have to laugh at these kind of questions/debates about Mac -v- PC
But there are a lot of reasons for and against as there is with most products, and ultimately it will boil down to what suits your needs best and what you can afford.
I switched over to Mac about 2 or 3 years ago when I purchased myself a 20″ iMac. Instantly I fell in love with it. It took all of 3 or 4 minutes and I was up and running. I had bought a PC few months before hand for my Dad and took over an hour to eventually get it up and running with what he needed, which wasn’t a whole lot. I regret not getting him a Mac Mini or little MacBook but he wasn’t willing to change from Windows. Old dogs, new tricks and all that.
From a design perspective there is no question that Mac wins hands down. Macs are designed and created for, Personal Computing…. where as a PC is just the total opposite. There is nothing Personal about it, the way Microsoft have the Windows OS organised and have it function are so business like it makes me cringe and get so frustrated with it I end up walking away.
Software and hardware integrates beautifully with a Mac. Little or no need to install drivers every time you get a new piece of hardware. Apple Software is a dream to use. Aperture is a piece of cake to use, iPhoto is brilliant and has great edit capabilities.
I could go on and on. I am a relatively new Mac user and am now on my third Machine. A MacBook Pro 15″ and it is fine for editing photographs on. Screen is fine. Would love a bigger screen but I think the 17″ MacBook Pro is just that bit too big to be carting around.
I have my eyes set on a 24″ iMac, but I will have to wait and see how determined I am to get the cash for one.
Decide what is important for you though. I have found that you will get better value for money in the long term for your Mac than with a PC although a PC will appear cheaper at the checkout. But your Mac will last longer and if you decide to resell you will get more for your Mac than you would for a PC.
adrianmatthewsParticipantMac or PC…….MAC,
you can install a program called PARALLELS DESKTOP on your mac, you then can install XP and any other PC application no bother.
They look better at the airport also….

How much longer? I’m still using a 7 year old 256 MB P4 PC running Windows 2000 and it’s very well able to process my raw images. And yes, of course you’ll get more for a Mac if you decide to sell it, because it cost more to buy in the first place. But I suspect that if you look at the new price to used price ratio between a Mac and a PC there probably isn’t that much of a difference.
It’s possible to find pro’s and con’s in any debate like this and most of the time these discussions only end up going around in circles. The best computer to use is one you feel most at home with and when you see your 10″x8″ image hanging on a wall at the end of it all, I bet a viewer won’t be able to tell if it was processed on a Mac or a PC or taken on a Nikon or a Canon camera, or shot in 8-bit JPG mode or 14-bit RAW mode!

Unix rulez ;)Then I guess it’s a Mac for you, with it’s XNU based architecture (in OS X)
GizzoParticipanterm…..
well…..
it’s the first time that I hear people admitting that OSX is derived from unix :) and not vice-versa!!!no, for me just open source….. debian or debian-based (like ubuntu).
an operating system is like sex…. better when free! :DseanmcfotoMemberEr… absolutely no one says that Unix came from OS X Gizzo……
It’s okay Thorsten, I understand your secret lust for the sleek design and inherent lack of hardware conflict in a Macbook Pro, but your PC heritage has you tied down ;)

of course not! this is a respectable forum!
but in some other places I’ve heard all sort of stories ;)Shutter BugMemberI’ve been using my iMac now for around a year. Would never go back to PC’s, too many problems.
For every PC Software you can’t find for Mac, there’s an alternative anyway.
I have Photoshop Elements 6 installed on my iMac
rastapopolosMemberHi –
I find it interesting that so few posters in this thread differentiate between the hardware (Mac or PC) and the operating system that runs on it (Most often Windows or OSX). For the last few years Macs have been using the PC architecture, so really the only difference is in the operating system and the apps you choose to run on it.
There is a third way – it’s called Linux. You can use commodity hardware (I’m using a Dell XPS420) and install a rock-solid operating system which will scale up to handle any workload you can throw at it.
cheers
Ben
