Went to Macchu Picchu in Peru some years back – the regular drill is a 4 day trek and then on the last night you stay in a hostel that is a 90 minute walk from the actual site of Macchu Picchu; wake up really early and go there to see the sun rise. All very mystic.
When I was there it was mid-rainy season and we spent most of the time looking at cloud. (I recall at one point at a mountain pass, reading in the Lonely Planet ‘truly this is one of the finest vistas in all of south america”, we could not see more than ten yards away.
We had no guide for the trip and so on the final morning we took a wrong turn and ended up on a railway line ten miles away….. so that after four days of hiking, we finally arrived there by air conditioned coach with a bunch of Canadian OAPs…here are some photos that half worked in all the cloud (all scanned from film)snaphappyMemberthe third is a great shot if I were to change anything though I would include at little more of the foreground to accentuate the vastness of the valley below the first image is a great composition but there seems to be a grainy/noisey affect on the image as if it were over sharpened after scanning. Hope you dont find my comments over critical I always enjoy seeing places I will probably never get to see with my own eyes
BMParticipantLiam2673Participanttks for looking guys.
snaphappy…..on the first image, I looked at the original print I have after seeing your comment and it is a lot more toned down….it looks like it has been oversharpend a little, & the green on the terraces looks a bit too bright, lime green type, so fair point.
on the third, I posted the full original print so not much i can do with foreground. This one below is from the same roll and has a bit more foreground. I cropped out a bit of the sky in this one since it was all just white cloud….
justaguyParticipantMadeleineCalaidoWeberParticipantthe potencial of the images is outstanding….colour and contrast adjustments would make them stunning. i would give it a try.
Cheers
MadeleineLiam2673Participanttks Madeline……i’ll try to follow your tips and see what happens.
justaguy…..to be honest, I thought the place was slightly disappointing…..admittedly the weather was crap when we were there……it is very impressive no doubt, but it is hyped up to the nines and for me it didn’t quite warrant that…for example I’d have been equally impressed with the beehive huts on Skellig Mor.
thefizzParticipantI think the weather does influence what you think of a place. I was there in full sunshine in July 2004 and thought the place was incredible. Seeing the rays of light shine on the site as the sun came up was amazing having climbed the path of one of the mountains for a birdseye view. Sunset was equally as good. Very few people around at these times also.

Thanks for telling that. Up to Skellig Mor so. You just saved me 2 to 3000 euro
DeeboParticipantI am Jealous too. I would love to visit this site.
I agree that the weather and the torrid time of hiking about and wrong turns has spoiled your experience. But you have been there and seen the place so fair play
Looks mighty impressive and hard to gauge the scale of the place.Dee
ClickParticipantWas there in 2006 myself, and encounterd the same cloudy problem as well. Got up at 6, and took the 1st bus up, and it was lashing it down. I couldn’t see more than 40 yards at any time, and after a few hours got bored actually (which is a horrible thing to say!). Went for lunch at the gatehouse, and after an hour or so, the clouds lifted, and when I went back in again, I was totally blown away by what lay in front of me. Absolutly stunning place, and I couldn’t be dragged away…. Climbing up the mountain to see an overview of the place was unbelievable. It gives you an idea of the vastness of the place, and how it is built on the top of the mountain. Notice how the top of it is shaped like a Condor. I nearly missed the last bus out again……
Will post a couple of shots to give you an idea.

I did miss the last bus out but have to say the 8km walk down in the dark was cool. At that altitude, the stars looked so close I felt I could reach out and grab them.
Liam2673ParticipantClick….looks like I should have waited a bit longer !!! oh dear…..
your second photo looks great.
DeeboParticipantYes agree with Liam, second shot is superb. A bit of gradient work to add some blue to the sky at the tip of the mountain would make this shop excellent.
