Some shots of the Galway arts festival parade, I struggled somewhat dealing with the low light but was quite happy with a few… (out of a lot!!) : )
C+C very welcome please!! :roll:irishshaguaParticipantWhat ISO were you shooting at. They are very nosiy. I think the first is the better of the two although maybe the background could be darkened a bit to make the girl stand out in the frame a bit more. The motion blur on the fans looks very good and you’ve still kept the face reasonably sharp. Not bad but the nosie is very distracting unfortunately…. I do have terribly trouble shooting in low light myself. I know how frustrating it can be.
Second image looks a bit mad….
Looks like it was a good show anyways. Cheers for sharing
Brianb318ispParticipantI agree. First shot is good, but crop it to draw attention to the top part of the girl.
ShutrBugMemberThanks for the comments lads.
Yes, i agree, the images really are pretty noisy… I was at iso 1600, f7.1/shutter 1/15. I was trying to find a good combination of aperture and shutter speed so as to keep the image bright enough and to try and keep the image as sharp as possible.
Anyway, i’m enjoying the learning. :)

Also, don;t zoom much – use nearer the 18mm end of your lens – motion blurring is less noticeable and you’ll get more light in. You could also try some flash but with dial out some FEC so not to loose the natural light. Without a fast lens (f2.8 is usually good), you will always struggle in this situation. I think Nikon do any equivalent of Canon’s nifty fifty (really cheap but high quality 50mm F1.8 prime) and might be worth checking out.
ShutrBugMemberThanks B3…whatever. I’m just gonna call you speedy….
Yeah, i’ve certainly been thinking about investing in some decent lenses apart from the basic kit lens i have now.
Thanks for the tips anyway, think i might go for a practice shoot into town tonight maybe…
-Sdave100ParticipantHi Shutterbug,
I think the first one is good…Great colour in that Parade, I was there myself down near Spanish Arch..Where were you shooting from ?
I posted a few under people earlier..Light levels were tricky alright..I was shooting at 1600 with onboard flash..Took plenty of practise shots before the parade arrived…
Like yourself I was pleased with at nice few…Some were for the bin though.
daithi.
ShutrBugMemberHey daithi. Thanks, yeah there really was some wonderful colour in the parade alright, first time i’ve seen the parade in years so i really enjoyed it!! I arrived kinda late so ended up stuck in front of harvest off-licence on the other side of the bridge. But once i plucked up the courage to just push through onto the road i had plenty of space to shoot…..
Must check out your pics in “people”, I didn’t know where to put mine….
