Macro lens!

    Hi all,

This will come across as a VERY silly question…. but here goes….. Am doing a bit of messing around with my camera (Canon 350d, lens is canon zoom lens EF 50-200mm) and have decided to give the macro mode a go. So I switch it to “macro” and it doesn’t appear to be able to focus on anything! I’m just trying to take a picture of a flower, approximately 12 inches away from me and when I press the shutter button the lens just cranks in and out and doesn’t focus!

HELP! Am I going mad? What am I doing wrong?

I’ve searched google, the manual and had a search on the photographyireland site but can’t find anything……

All help will be most appreciated!

    Cheers

Not entirely sure on that lens, but 12 inches may be too far away. All macro will do is adjust the ability to focus on subjects close-up. If with standard focusing, it focuses on the subject at that distance, then you don’t need to flick the macro switch.

In either case, I’d strongly recommend manually focusing for macro shots, which in effect makes your macro button pointless anyway.

Give manual focus a go and see how you get on! :)

Yes it sounds to me like you are too close for focus for the particular lens you are using. If it is not a true macro lens then all the macro button does is allow you to focus slightly closer than normal. Move back slightly to see what difference it makes, and I suspect it will focus. If you cannot achieve focus manually from the original point, then you are definitely too close.
If you can achieve focus manually, then the problem would just be caused by low light and/or lack of contrast when the camers struggles to use AF.

    Hope this helps!
